Mark Millar Discusses Sentinels in X-Men Days of Future Past

Mark Millar, the man charged with the task of overseeing 20th Century Fox’s Marvel properties, has been spilling the beans on the forthcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Speaking to SFX, Millar said, “I don’t want to give too much away but the Sentinels are a big feature of this story. They will be cool and this will deliver on all of the teasers. We’ve all been waiting for this ever since X-Men: The Last Stand showed us one of their heads. Now it is finally coming, and we only have to pay ten quid to see it in the cinemas whereas they’re having to pay $100m to deliver it. So I’m delighted.”

Millar also reckons that director Bryan Singer is just the man to bring the many characters of the two X-Men universes together.

“It has actually been very well put together,” he explained. “Simon Kinberg and Matthew Vaughn worked on it together and they are both great at what they do. Then Bryan Singer came in, and, of course, he is Mr X-Men and he knows exactly how everything works. Just look at these first two X-Men movies: despite the huge cast of characters it all came together really well.

"These two movies never felt like overload and the balance was really, really good. On the other hand I though the third film felt crowded, but then Singer is excellent at working with ensemble casts. So with this one I feel it is all fine. I have read the screenplay and it doesn’t feel rushed and it doesn’t feel like it is too many characters.”

As for whether fan favourite Kitty Pryde will have a more substantial role in this one, Millar simply said, “Kitty Pryde fans will not be disappointed.”

For the full interview, including Millar’s thoughts on potential X-Men spin-offs, head to SFX.

Nikita: Devon Sawa on Owen Becoming Nikita's New Partner - and Maggie Q's Boba Fett Ordeal

A lot is going on for Nikita these days, as Michael deals with the shocking loss of his hand and being benched from the field. In the midst of this, Owen (Devon Sawa) has been called upon to begin accompanying Nikita on missions.

I spoke to Sawa about this current storyline, Owen’s mysterious, Wolverine-like past and more… including on-set conversations about Boba Fett.

IGN TV: This storyline is an interesting one for Owen because he’s really being made Nikita’s partner in an official way for the first time.

Devon Sawa: Yeah, Owen’s out of his element. He’s always been a solo guy, so partnering is kind of new to him. The dynamic works well. I mean, it would work better with Nikita and Michael, but he can’t be out there, of course, so Owen is filling in. Michael’s coaching him through it because it’s not his world - art galleries and all this stuff. But that’s where we’re at. Owen’s kind of Nikita’s sidekick.

IGN: It sounds like you’re working with Maggie quite a bit during all this.

Sawa: I love going to work with Maggie. She’s a trip. It’s great to be a part of that Batman and Robin duo. It’s a lot of fun.

IGN: Can you talk about this week’s mission?

Sawa: We’re after one of these Dirty Thirty guys who has broken the cardinal rule of Division, and that’s contacting your past. I guess because Division has gone down, he feels he can go after his past. So he goes after his girlfriend, and we want to stop him before the world finds out about Division. We want to get to him before the world does.

Devon Sawa in Nikita.

IGN: It’s interesting because while Owen doesn’t know his entire past, when we met him he was in love with someone outside Division – and then lost her because of them.

Sawa: Yeah, and that’s always something that bothers him. That’s why he wants to find Amanda so much, because he wants to find out about his past. And that’s his tie with Nikita, really; they both lost their loved ones.

IGN: How are Michael and Owen getting along in all of this?

Sawa: It’s tough for Michael to see Owen with his fiancée. If I put myself in Michael’s shoes, it’s got to be tough. But how I’ve been playing it up until this point is Owen isn’t really trying to go anywhere with Nikita in a romantic way.

IGN: You guys seem like a pretty friendly group on set. I don’t know how enjoyable it was for Shane on the technical side, but did you guys have some fun with the introduction of Michael’s robo-hand?

Sawa: We had a lot of fun with it. He’s got this series of gloves that goes on, and we make all the hand jokes you can think of. We reference Evil Dead… Idle Hands, even -- it’s been a lot of fun for us. I don’t know whether Shane [enjoyed it] or not -- I think he did!

I didn’t know they were going to chop off his hand. When I got the script, I was blown away. It was episode seven! How could you do that in episode seven? But crazier things will happen in upcoming episodes. The hand stuff is a lot of fun but things start getting really crazy from here on in.

Devon Sawa and Maggie Q in Nikita.

IGN: How much do they tell you guys beforehand about what’s to come?

Sawa: I think they tell Lyndsy, Shane and Maggie a little more than the rest of us, you know, because they’re the three leads. But I think Craig [Silverstein] wants to keep Owen in the dark, so he keeps me in the dark. I’ve really tried to master the way of getting stuff out of writers. I could never. I asked Craig once, “Is there going to be an Alex/Owen thing?” He goes, “Oh, we’ll see!” I was like, “That’s it? That’s all you can tell me?” So at this point there’s a script that I should be getting any day now that’s going to talk about Owen’s past, but I am 100 percent completely in the dark.

IGN: They’ve given him this kind of Wolverine dynamic this season...

Sawa: They gave me that note. I think I did episode four, and Craig was like, “We want him to be more like Wolverine, more like that guy. That’s the past he has.” So that’s been my reference.

IGN: So there’s an episode coming up with some pretty big pieces of that history?

Sawa: I’m hoping! I’ve been told it’s going to reveal some Owen stuff. There’s an episode coming up with Ari in two or three episodes, and he spills a little bit of stuff to Owen -- not enough to give him anything substantial, but enough to make him want to know more.

IGN: Melinda is such a great presence on the show. What’s it like working with her?

Sawa: I’ve had that one episode with Melinda, and it’s very comfortable to go to work with her because she’s such a pro and a great actress. I know this next episode [I’m waiting on the script for] is probably going to be Owen and Amanda, and I’m confident that I’m going to get there and have an amazing actress to work with. She’s so great at that character. Melinda’s awesome.

IGN: We talked at the beginning of the season about the whole funny Alex and Owen thing and the fact that there could be fans pushing for something between them when these characters had never met. Now that they are working together, will we see more of their dynamic?

Sawa: There’s an episode coming up where Alex and Owen go off on a little mission. They’re in a car together – I have some cool little scenes with Lyndsy. What makes it so brilliant is that there’s a comm in the car, and Sean’s listening to the whole thing on his headset. You can just see the smoke coming out of his ears. But that’s it for that. There’s no romance. I think the writers are making it action first, with drama. There are dabs of romance every once in a while. So far, Owen hasn’t really ventured into that romantic world.

IGN: Putting Owen in Division obviously allows him to interact more with all the characters. I’m hoping for more Owen/Birkhoff interaction, because you guys have had a couple of fun little moments – I loved Owen’s line about dissolving him.

Sawa: That’s the one episode I want. If I could request one episode, it would be an episode with me and Aaron, where it’s kind of a good cop/bad cop thing. I’ve gotten to work with Maggie and Shane and Lyndsy, and they’re all great, but I’d love some more Birkhoff/Owen. I think they would complement each other well, comically.

IGN: Last time we spoke, we ran out of time before you could tell me a quick story from the set. It involved Boba Fett and Maggie...

Sawa: Oh my God! Maggie had to endure this really long conversation -- it was me, Shane and I think Aaron. We were talking forever about the first Star Wars trilogy and Boba Fett, and I think she was in hell. So the next day we went out and got her her own Boba Fett action figure, and she now keeps it taped up to her fridge. But we allowed her into the Star Wars club after having to endure our hour of Boba Fett debating. It was a lot of fun.

IGN: Obviously you guys can have some long days on set, with lots of downtime. Suffice to say, there can be a lot of those types of conversations?

Sawa: Oh, yeah. We do all the time. We’ll be in Hamilton, Ontario -- a little tent in blizzard weather, space heaters, all bundled up -- and we’ll still be laughing and talking about the most bizarre things. It’s a good time.

Nikita airs Fridays at 8pm ET/PT on The CW.

Dead Space 3 Has 11 Pieces of Day One DLC

Dead Space 3 will launch with 11 pieces of day one DLC available, offering services ranging from speeding up loot collection to new suits and weapons for Isaac.

According to Eurogamer, most of the purchasable upgrades tie into the game's crafting system, specifically the scavenger bots that you can use to salvage weapon parts and resources scattered around the game world. It's worth noting that these DLC bundles are separate from the micro-transactions in the game's weapon crafting system discovered last week.

Three packs were spotted on the US PlayStation store that'll allow you to soup-up your little helpers, each priced at $4.99. One will increase your bots' capacity, another will strengthen its personality and the final one will speed up its loot collection. Prices for Europe and Australasia haven't been unveiled yet.

The scavenger bot's purpose is to give you an extra edge, since there's a bit of gameplay (and risk/reward) to using him and finding the richest resource caches.

Taking to the Dead Space blog, executive producer Steve Papoutsis explained the purpose of the scavenger bots, writing, "Everybody will find at least one of these bots in the game (and there a couple hidden ones to pick up, too.) The Scavenger Bot is an autonomous robot that can harvest resources for you and deliver them to the Tool Construction bench. Resources include stuff like somatic gel, scrap metal, tungsten - materials that you can use to craft into anything you want, like a health pack or weapon part.

"As a replacement for DS2’s credits, resources are a key part of the Dead Space 3 experience, and their placement in the game has been well thought out by our game designers. Whether by looting enemies, opening lockers, or exploring the world, you’ll find more than enough resources in-game to fully experience DS3 on any difficulty level.

"The scavenger bot's purpose is to give you an extra edge, since there's a bit of gameplay (and risk/reward) to using him and finding the richest resource caches. You can also choose to download upgrades to the scavenger bot that double his capacity or speed up his trips to the bench."

The other packs available include new weapons and suits for Isaac, as well as those included in special editions of the game. The cost for these varies between $0.99 and $4.99, with the latter being more common. Finally, as is becoming woefully commonplace these days, an online pass will be available for $9.99 so you can play online if you haven't bought a new copy of the game.

God of War: Ascension's Single Player Is Predictably Awesome

God of War: Ascension single player is so good that all I wanted to do was stop playing it this evening. Slitting the throat of a monster with its own blade, smashing open red chests for orbs, staring slack-jawed at one of the most beautiful games on the PS3 – I understood early on that this was the Kratos experience we all know and love; no need to ruin it for myself. I wanted to put the controller down and wait for a complete copy of the game to arrive.

Instead, I played the first 30 minutes of the single-player adventure, but you don’t have to rely on my feeble words to experience it. Here’s the playthrough for your viewing pleasure. Check it out, and then read my analysis below.

Pretty cool, right? I’m sure you have your own takeaways from the demo – which I’m anxious to read, so post in the comments below – but after playing the game, I have four “big ideas” of my own.

IT’S SICKENLY BEAUTIFUL

I don’t know how well a video on the Internet conveys it, but God of War: Ascension is truly striking. As Kratos tears bug people in half, their blood kicks up and covers his skin. When he takes down the cyclops, you get a glimpse inside the gash and can see the rib cage. The environments are crisp and clear even when they’re rotating a la Inception. Everybody’s skin looks pliable and real.

I had a few occasions where finishing moves similar to the ones in multiplayer (ripping heads off, slamming people into the wall) didn’t line up right because of stairs or half walls, but there’s no denying that – somehow – this game looks better than God of War III.

ASCENSION IS CINEMATIC EVOLUTION

Before I got my hands on a controller, Sony showed a video about the journey to God of War: Ascension. Looking back at some of those PS2 boss battles, it was clear how far the franchise has come in storytelling. I remember God of War III really stressing scope with camera pans and wide shots, but God of War: Ascension is taking that even further.

When the bugs enter the Hecatonchires’ hand and it does that bone-breaking, monster birthing animation, I cringed. When the camera pans back to show you the tons of hands and the Hecatonchires’ face as an entrance way, I understood the scope of the battle. (Fun Greek mythology fact, Wikipedia says that Hecatonchires means “hundred-handed one.”) When Kratos rips one of the Blades of Chaos free and swipes at the Fury, it feels like an epic movie scene.

THE NEW MOVES FIT IN

Blah, blah, graphics. Blah, blah, cinematic talk. You want to know how it plays. Then answer is: very well. God of War combat has always been the franchise’s calling card, and that’s no different here. Ascension is fun to pay, but the new moves make it feel deeper than its predecessors.

You can impale one foe and remain tethered to him until going in for the kill or hurling at the other enemies. Tapping R1 on a stunned enemy gives you a break from battle to bask in a horrific finishing move. Picking up a sword on the battlefield expands your arsenal, but you can also hurl it into enemies for extra damage.

However, there’s one addition I’m a really big fan of and it isn’t even combat related. When Kratos buries his blade into a wall and slides down, you can now steer him. Developer Sony Santa Monica brings the camera in nice and tight for this (Cinematic evolution!) and then tosses a whole bunch of obstructions Kratos needs to get around. It’s a slick way of breaking up the game and making it feel like there’s more to do.

I UNDERSTAND KRATOS MORE ALREADY

I’ve said that Kratos is a dumb character; I think it’s ridiculous that he’s so angry all the time. For years, people have argued that if I was tricked into killing my wife and daughter like he was, I’d be pissed, too, but I still think it’s insane to be yelling every line of dialogue. Well, I got to see the live action God of War ad PlayStation has been teasing, and it actually got me pumped and offered a window into Kratos as a man. A man who smiles and tears up.

I have no idea how much God of War: Ascension’s story – a prequel set six months to a year after the death of Kratos’ family – will touch on emotions other than rage, but even that fleeting glimpse made me like Kratos a bit more. This demo kicks off with him being tortured by a Fury, one of the sisters that targets those who break blood oaths with the gods, so it seems like we might get some range from Kratos. At least a little which is a lot more than usual.

And, if I’m wrong, the game will still look awesome and be fun to play, so there’s that. I just hope the single-player campaign is nice and long as multiplayer has been pushed so much. Speaking of, did you see the bald guy Kratos “freed” from his prison cell? I’m 99-percent sure that’s the multiplayer character, so there’s the crossover.

God of War: Ascension arrives on March 12th. Look for lots more on IGN as we gear up for the return of the Ghost of Sparta.
