Assassin's Creed Anthology Dated and Priced

Following on from yesterday's leaked retail listing on Amazon France, Ubisoft has confirmed the existence of the Assassin's Creed Anthology Edition, and detailed when we'll be able to get hold of it.

The Assassin's Creed Anthology Edition will be available for Xbox 360 and PS3 exclusively through Amazon in both Europe from November 29 for €150, and the UK from November 30 for £119.99.

Unfortunately for those of you Stateside, it appears Ubisoft has no plans to bring the Anthology Edition to America. A representative for the company told IGN that the bundle is not currently scheduled for release in the US.

The Assassin's Creed Anthology Edition will include include Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed II, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood - The Da Vinci Edition, Assassin's Creed: Revelations - The Ottoman Edition and the just-released Assassin's Creed III. The bundle will also include all the expansion packs and DLC for the Assassin's Creed games, as well as the Assassin's Creed III Season Pass, which provides full access to all forthcoming downloadable content for the game.

Also included in the pack are five lithographs, a steel book and a collector’s box. For more details on the Assassin's Creed Anthology Edition, check out the original story.

Japan Getting Mario & Animal Crossing 3DS XLs

Nintendo has unveiled two new special edition 3DS XL bundles, and they're ridiculously cute.

Both the New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Animal Crossing 3DS editions come bundled with their respective title, and are currently only slated for a Japanese release.

They look incredible (even if the Mario one does look a little bit like Louis Vuitton has tried his hand at console decoration), so it's a shame that they're region-locked. Still, there are a fair few Japanese titles we've been eyeing up lately that don't seem likely to get a Western release date, so it may be worth it for that reason alone.

IPTL Premier Division - Team Liquid Preview

In the first season of the IGN Pro Team League, Team Liquid will look to replicate their success from the final edition of IPL’s Team Arena Challenge, where they came within one series of taking the entire tournament, qualifying them for the Premier Division in the new IPTL format.

Liquid’s history in team league play is a tale of two eras: pre-TaeJa and post-TaeJa.  Before the acquisition of the Korean Terran in March of this year, Liquid was a strong foreign team with a couple of Korean players to add some luster to the lineup, but just did not stack up against the deep rosters of the GSTL-caliber teams.  They were able to win the small team league event put on by NASL, but other foreign teams were the only competition.  The primarily foreign Liquid roster was not competitive when invited to participate in GSTL 2012 Season. TaeJa was unable to attend the first match against ZeNEX, where the ZeNEX Zerg Life all-killed Liquid, and in the second match HerO was the only player to manage any game wins off of NSHoSeo, taking two maps as the last hope for Liquid before losing.

In the time since the lackluster team performance in Korea, TaeJa has become one of the very best players in all of Starcraft 2, and brought Team Liquid to a whole new level of team league performance.  Their IPL TAC 3 campaign began with a bang, with Zenio all-killing Dignitas in the first round and a 5-1 trouncing of Mouz by Sheth and HayprO.  Then the foreign foes so easily swept aside by the backup players of Liquid were replaced by Korean teams, beginning with Prime.  Things seemed dire for Liquid, as they quickly fell behind Prime by a 3-0 margin before TaeJa came in and worked his magic, disposing of the entire Prime team, securing his first all-kill.

In the next round of the winner’s bracket, Liquid did lose to SlayerS and fall to the loser’s bracket, but that only served to provide the team and TaeJa more opportunities to shine.  Their first match was a team effort, with TaeJa, Ret, and HerO all taking sets in a victory over MVP.  The next clan war came against StarTale, a team with a roster chock full of Code S players, and Liquid once again fell behind at the start, losing four maps to Ace and Life. The situation was dire, and the best players for StarTale had yet to come into play.  TaeJa, however, was unimpressed, coming in as the last player for Liquid and once again cleaning house, defeating Life, Curious, Squirtle, and Bomber in succession to steal victory from the jaws of defeat.

Not content with this achievement, TaeJa scored another four kills in a win over SlayerS to send Liquid the TAC 3 finals in San Francisco, and there met the team who made it through the winner’s bracket unscathed, Incredible Miracle.  In the first best of nine series, IM led off with arguably their strongest player, the most recent GSL champion Seed. After he took game one from Ret, Liquid brought the big guns out early, relying on TaeJa to deal with the powerful IM Protoss.  No coaching decisions were necessary after that, as TaeJa all-killed the Korean powerhouse team.  However, a second best of nine series followed since Liquid came up through the loser’s bracket, and lightning did not strike twice for the community favorites.  Seed avenged his defeat by ending another TaeJa streak after only two victories, and then proceeded to finish off the rest of the team.

Clearly, the key to Liquid’s success is the Terran superstar TaeJa, especially in a stacked field like the Premier Division of the IPTL.  It is not much of a stretch to consider him the most consistent Terran player in the world right now, and he needs to bring that consistency to every clan war this season for Liquid to have a chance at advancing from the group stage.  TaeJa is excellent in all matchups, but has a particularly good TvZ.  This could prove to be quite advantageous, as Liquid’s group features Stephano and DongRaeGu as opposing team aces.  Obviously, there are a number of other great players between the rosters of EG, MVP, and SlayerS, but TaeJa should be considered the favorite in every set he plays.

The other major threat for Liquid is their longest tenured Korean, the Protoss player HerO.  With the arrival of TaeJa as ace, much of the pressure that was on HerO to take maps from the opposition’s best players is now gone, which should help avail some of the nerve issues he has been known for in the past.  Frankly, HerO could actually be an ace on many great teams, and an absolute boon to have as a major backup for the frontline player.  His creative play makes him an especially strong PvP player, and his other matchups are solid as well, as you can expect from any player who has won a Dreamhack Open.  Expect him to flourish alongside TaeJa this season.

A stable of Zerg players form the rest of the lineup that we will likely see in the IPTL: the Korean Zenio, and the foreigners Ret, Sheth and TLO.  Zenio has been sitting around the border of Code A and Code S for a while, the sign of a player with great potential but not the ability to pull off his best play on a regular basis.  After taking that into consideration, he is still the third best player behind his Korean brethren, and the most reliable Zerg.  Liquid will look to use him in the leadoff role often, trying to grab a couple of wins behind his well-balanced style of play.

The foreigner Zergs are all wild cards, players who with a win here and there can make a big difference for the team.  When Ret is on top of his game, he can out-macro anyone with his Brood War-trained mechanics, but his decision making is lacking. Sheth is a good player, but just not on the same level as the high-caliber opponents he will be facing in this league.  TLO, with his creative play that borders on the ridiculous, can steal a win if he catches a foe off-guard with a wacky build.  Any maps taken by these players at this level of competition should be viewed as a gift, making life easier for the core of Korean stars.

Liquid was somewhat lucky to end up in Group A, as the only other foreign team—Evil Geniuses—is also in the group.  To add to that, the arguably strongest Korean teams Incredible Miracle and StarTale, along with the massive amount of Code S players they bring with them, are in Group B.  This should create easier match-ups for TaeJa and HerO, who will have fewer players of equivalent skill to play against.  Even so, the group stage will be a challenge, as MVP and SlayerS have skilled players of their own, and possess greater overall depth in these best of nine scenarios than Liquid.  The match versus EG is almost a must win for Liquid, as having a 1-0 edge before facing off against the Korean squads will give them a much better chance of advancing.

The match against EG will take place on September 11th, and is also the first match of the IPTL Premier division, so be sure to tune in!

Check out Razer's BlackShark, Minus Battlefield 3 Logo

We liked the Battlefield 3 Collector's Edition of Razer's BlackShark headset for its solid construction, solid sound performance and badass design. (Check out the full review.)

But not everybody wants the name of a shooter that came out last year embossed on headphones that will likely outlast whatever console you may have played it on. Good thing Razer announced this black and green version, which will sell for $119.99 ($10 less than the Battlefield 3 edition).

You can order the face-lifted BlackShark from Razer, or pick one up when they hit store shelves in mid-late September.

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition Review

Praise the sun! A Souls game has arrived on PC. It is surely weary. We'll let it rest, and get to the new edition's bonus content and the quality of the port in a moment. On the off chance you've been off collecting beetles for the last three years and missed Dark Souls entirely, here's a recap of why to be excited.

On consoles, this began with 2009's Demon's Souls, a sleeper hit that offered a quest so hard, so hefty, so immaculately crafted that developer From Software might have hewn it from rock. It and sequel Dark Souls summoned staggering review scores, gifting a generation of jaded gamers with a cocktail of fear and self-respect.

You're best off not taking your cues from Dark Souls' charming marketing slogan of “YOU WILL DIE.” While it's best known for being nipple-rippingly difficult, ultimately, it's all about the weight I was talking about earlier. That dark heft. First and foremost, this is the physical weight of your character, and the foreboding atmosphere of From Software's stunning world.

Dark Souls tells the story of your hero trying to save an intriguing world which, by every possible metric, fell long ago. Abominations make their homes in the forgotten nooks of a lost civilisation. A handful of enigmatic survivors are all that's left, but you're as free to talk to them as kill them, and they're as liable to help you as to lie. Best of all, the game literally kills you off somewhere between character creation and the first cut-scene. Above all, Dark Souls seems to thrill at escaping expectations.

Dark Souls can happily scare the crap out of you in broad daylight, with something as simple as a giant insect dive-bombing your head as you cross a narrow walkway.

An example is how your character controls. Just to swing a sword sees your avatar putting their back, shoulder and wrist into the blow, leaving you to wince at the weapon's weight. Hit attack again, and you'll roll the weapon around down, up and around, maintaining its momentum to strike once more, quicker this time. But every single attack, every block with your shield, every panicked evasive roll, takes a fat bite out of your endurance meter. Never mind whatever action games you've played before, you have to learn to fight all over again because, simply put, you're only human.

That might not sound so bad when you're gleefully taking apart a zombie with a mace. How are you going to deal with a pack of feral dogs? Or a rat as big as a Land Rover? These are the questions Dark Souls asks you, before leaning back in its high-backed leather chair to light a cigarette. It never rushes you. It never needs to. It simply tells you, to your face, that certain death lies this way. And then it tells you to walk.

Which brings us to the radioactive feather in Dark Souls' cap. Death is something you fear. If you die, you don't just get cast back to the nearest waypoint. You run the risk of losing any unspent XP or precious humanity points. Never mind fleeing from ghosts in brooding catacombs. Dark Souls can happily scare the crap out of you in broad daylight, with something as simple as a giant insect dive-bombing your head as you cross a narrow walkway.

All of which is why Dark Souls has a reputation of being a colossal beast, but also so addictive. If a game's capable of making you grin with each new item you furtively recover, imagine how it feels to stand over a slain boss. On a minute to minute level, though, what makes Dark Souls moreish is its suffocating consistency. That down-to-earth, tactile combat is a reason to play Dark Souls in and of itself, but it also functions to immerse you in the game's similarly plausible world.

What defines Dark Souls is the moment you decide you're literally out of your depth, and turn the hell around, with all your precious XP intact, to go explore somewhere else. But for the most part, you won't do that. You Will Die.

You're not completing levels, or even doubling back in the Metroidvania style. You're just exploring, taking step after nervous step through a foul wonderland that oscillates between great cruelty, and moments of sweet relief. Its great achievement is in not feeling like a game world at all, much as Minecraft didn't, and it's a similar joy to explore. This simply feels like a place where you really, really shouldn't be, where every step is heavy with dread.

Let's put it this way - it's not the petrifying Capra Demon boss that defines Dark Souls. It's not the key he drops, that leads you to a room where you fight a disgusting, cannibalistic chef. It's not the labyrinthine sewer that the chef guards, or the village you find beneath the sewer, or the putrid moat the village is built above. It's not the nauseating creatures that live in the moat, nor is it the terrible beast that lays its eggs in them. It's not the staircase you find behind her, leading you down still further. What defines Dark Souls is the moment you decide you're literally out of your depth, and turn the hell around, with all your precious XP intact, to go explore somewhere else. But for the most part, you won't do that. You Will Die.

Saving Dark Souls from the loneliness that haunted the open worlds of say, Metroid, is its online functionality, which was designed with the same blend of accuracy and fearless creativity that defines the rest of the game. Players can scratch messages into the ground, which are pulled at random into your own world. Watch Out For Wizard, you'll find, lying ominously before a closed door. Or more dubious stuff still - Step Off, written over a chasm into blackest darkness.

More traditional multiplayer is limited to blue and black phantoms - other players invading your world, to help or assassinate you, for their own selfish aims. Offering some of those moments of relief are the game's bloodstains. Touch one, and you'll see the final seconds of a real-life player, which is a bit like opening a present. Perhaps you'll get a poignant warning, as they flee from something you didn't spot, or you'll just laugh as they go cartwheeling lackadaisically off a ledge.

The mouse and keyboard controls in the Prepare to Die edition are a war crime. Losing the gentle acceleration of analog movement would have been bad enough, but the mouse doesn't control the camera so much as wrestle it around on a rubber leash.

All of this survives, totally intact, in the PC port, with a single caveat - you must own a Xbox 360 pad, or suitable equivalent.

The mouse and keyboard controls in the Prepare to Die edition are a war crime. Losing the gentle acceleration of analog movement would have been bad enough, but the mouse doesn't control the camera so much as wrestle it around on a rubber leash. Meanwhile, the GUI's adaption to the keyboard is just awkward. All told, you could be playing on an emulator. If you don't own a pad but somehow end up with Dark Souls running on your PC, remove the power cable from the back with a barge pole.

But if you do own a pad, and quickly grab this 80Kb fan hotpix, which unlocks the game's resolution from 1024x720, you'll be able to enjoy the definitive edition of Dark Souls until the Artorias of the Abyss DLC arrives for consoles this winter. That content's packed in the PC version for free, and we're pleased to announce that it's... fine. It's just fine.

The best thing we can say is that it's not ungenerous. It's three whole new areas for you to plunge through like a nervous knife, each packed with the epic bosses, new items, new spells and unsettling NPCs that you've come to expect during the rest of the game (Artorias of the Abyss is, sadly, squirreled away towards very end of Dark Souls).

You'll cut off the tail of a chimera to use as a whip. You'll descend deeper than you've ever been before. But throughout, there's the niggling sense that this wasn't the work of the entire From Software team.

This being DLC that's basically a given, but it shouldn't feel that way. The first new area, Royal Woods, repurposes a ton of art assets from Dark Souls' other trembling forest of Darkroot Garden. The next area, Oolacile Township, is a definite high point – a cluster of slumped towers you have to pick your way down – but it fails to surprise in the way that Dark Souls' best areas do. Finally, the Chasm of the Abyss itself is as barren, rather than as bleak, as the name implies. All of that said, of the four new bosses, the duel with the disturbingly fast Knight Artorias is my new favourite of any Souls game. Good luck with that.

Play Guild Wars 2 Early, Get a Free Hat

ArenaNet has announced a limited edition hat for anyone who plays Guild Wars 2 early. From August 25th through September 12th, every player will receive a Celebration Hat, “a baseball cap with the iconic Guild Wars 2 dragon logo” that ArenaNet calls “a stylish addition to your town attire!”

The Celebration Hat will be available in the Black Lion Trading Company for zero gems. It can be found in the Style category by pressing O during the game and cannot be traded to other players. The Celebration Hat will be available to any character on your account.

Guild Wars 2 officially launches on August 28th but will be available starting tonight through ArenaNet’s headstart program, which allows anyone who pre-purchased and installed the game to play early. Limited Edition Borderlands 2 Top Trumps

Independent game shops around the UK will be selling limited edition Borderlands 2 Top Trumps to those who pre-order the game.

The 'Guns Guns Guns' deck will never be sold at major retail outlets, with only 5000 decks being printed.

“Only 5000 packs of cards will be distributed across the country and will be available on a first-come-first served basis to those who pre-order Borderlands 2. Once they’re gone, they’re gone so I’d encourage people to check with their local Indie store to see if they’re stocking the cards”, says Ben Lawrence, UK PR Manager 2K Games, “We want to turn everyone in Vault Hunters!”

A host of Borderlands 2 special editions and pre-order exclusives have already been announced for the RPG shooter.

Borderlands 2 is out on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in the UK on September 21st.

Dream Teams Collide in NBA 2K13

L.A. Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant made waves before the 2012 Summer Olympics began when he said that the 2012 edition of Team USA could beat the fabled 1992 Dream Team that featured no fewer than 11 Hall of Famers. “It’d be a tough one,” Kobe predicted. “But I think we could pull it out.”

Unsurprisingly, the 1992 legends literally chuckled at the notion. “I absolutely laughed,” Michael Jordan said in response. “For him to compare those two teams is not one of the smarter things he ever could have done.” Original Dream Team forward Charles Barkley also got a kick out of Bryant’s prediction, retorting, “Other than Kobe, LeBron, and Kevin Durant, I don’t think anybody else on that team makes our team.”

Dream Weavers

So many Hall of Famers, so few roster spaces.

Since time machines haven’t been invented yet, how can we possibly settle this eternal debate? Enter NBA 2K13, which will feature a Dream Team mode that lets you pit the 1992 team against the 2012 squad. Perhaps the bigger news is the long-awaited video game return of Barkley, who lends his name and likeness to a hoops game for the first time since the Sega Genesis cult classic Barkley Shut Up and Jam! 2 in 1995. Why now, Sir Charles?

“[NBA 2K13 executive producer] Jay-Z put in a call to Charles himself and helped us forge an agreement,” said 2K Sports marketing VP Jason Argent.

Ultimately, only Scottie Pippen, whom 2K could not reach a licensing agreement with, is excluded from the roster. Still, Jordan commented to IGN about the Dream Team face-off, “I think it’s going to start debates. I don’t think it’s going to end any.”

And so the gang is finally all back together. Why did it take so long for His Airness to sign on the dotted line with a video game company? “I just didn’t have a passion to do that, initially,” Jordan said. “[But now] I felt the need to connect to this different era, this different generation,” because “now, these kids don’t have an opportunity to see me play” on TV or in-person.

Hands-On Impressions

But what of the game itself? We finally got to play it, and a few significant changes should keep hoops fans happy for another year. First is the Control Stick. Think of it as a merging of NBA 2K’s long-running Isomotion controls with NBA Live’s old Freestyle controls. Basically, you now hold the left trigger in order to go into the Shot Stick you already know. The default actions on the right thumbstick are now ball and body controls, allowing you to do a ridiculous array of moves. Even bounce passes are now at your control by holding LT and pressing A.

“There were things in basketball we just couldn’t do with Isomotion as it was before,” said gameplay director Rob Jones.

Second are Signature Skills, a new way of differentiating the unique talents of the league’s best players. Expect upwards of 30 of them total, with each player having up to five of the passive abilities. Clutch, Deadeye, Lockdown Defender, and others will make the stars just a little more accurate to their real-life counterparts, and in My Player you’ll be able to develop them with your custom avatar.

The third is for Xbox fans, and it’s Kinect voice support. Don’t panic, though: there’s nary a gesture control to be found. Instead, you can simply call out plays with your voice rather than digging through the D-pad menu during possessions. For instance, you can say, “Run a screen for me,” or “Call a post play for Bosh.”

Tip-Off

I always loved NBA Live’s Freestyle controls, so mixing them with NBA 2K13’s more simulation-style gameplay is a huge win for me. Combine that with the return of my all-time favorite player Charles Barkley and (most of) the rest of the original Dream Team and NBA 2K13 might have somehow found a way to up its game yet again. Now if we could just get Jay-Z to give Scottie Pippen a call…

Baldur's Gate -- Enhanced Edition Pricing, Release Date Announced




Moments ago a countdown clock finished on the official Baldur's Gate website. With the conclusion of the timer comes the news that Baldur's Gate -- Enhanced Edition is coming to iOS and Mac OSX this September, Windows on September 18th and Android sometime to be determined. The mobile versions of the game will retail for US $9.99, while the OSX and Windows versions will be priced at $19.99.

Pokémon Profiles: Lucario




The time has come for the latest edition of IGN's Pokémon Profiles! In case you missed the first installment, Pokémon Profiles is our new video series in which we discuss the overall awesomeness of a different monster every week for your catching and watching pleasure. Afterwards, we ask you to vote on which monster you'd like us to profile next. No generation is off limits - we intend to give due love and credit to them all. Sound good? Then let's get started!

As a reminder, we give it two weeks between the vote and when the corresponding Profile goes up (this gives us plenty of time to collect results and make the episode as awesome as possible). As for this week, next up is #448 in the National Dex - Lucario. This badass Pokémon is full of fight, and a capable Brawler to boot.
