Empire Strikes Back Screenwriter May Return for Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX

Holy crap, fanboys!

Deadline reports that Disney has approached Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan and screenwriter Simon Kinberg (X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: First Class) about scripting Star Wars: Episode VII and Star Wars: Episode IX. Oscar winner Michael Arndt is scripting Star Wars: Episode VII.

What's unclear from Deadline's report is whether Kasdan and Kinberg are writing both installments together, or if Kasdan is taking on Episode VIII and Kinberg's doing Episode IX, respectively.

Kasdan also wrote the video game Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, as well as a little movie called Raiders of the Lost Ark. His other film credits include Silverado, The Big Chill, The Accidental Tourist, The Bodyguard, Wyatt Earp, and Dreamcatcher.

In addition to the X-Men films, Kinberg also scripted Jumper, This Means War, Sherlock Holmes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and xXX: State of the Union.

Toy Story 3 Screenwriter May Write Star Wars: Episiode VII

Today brings word that Star Wars: Episode VII may have found its screenwriter.

Vulture claims that Oscar winner Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3, Little Miss Sunshine) "has written a 40- to 50-page treatment for the film and is likely to be at least one of the writers when the Disney/Lucasfilm project begins shooting in 2014." They say Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo are indeed in it.

Furthermore, Vulture hears "Arndt's 40-something page treatment will soon be crossing the desks of top directors, including Brad Bird, Steven Spielberg (Lucasfilm’s co-chair, Kathleen Kennedy's former producing partner), and J.J. Abrams. Whether they’d be interested is unknown (Star Wars is a lot of baggage for an established director), but Disney wants to make sure they’ve at least tried the biggest names."

Arndt also co-wrote the screenplay adaptation of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which is currently in production.

Taken 3 Could Happen

Taken 2 screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen has said that Taken 3 is on the cards.

And unsurprisingly the film's $100m global opening has been cited as the main inspiration behind the second sequel. Speaking to Hollywood.com, Kamen said, “We didn't start talking about [Taken 3] until we saw the numbers," explains Kamen. "But then we said, 'Oh, OK. I think we should do a third one.' And Fox wants us to do a third one."

Star of the series Liam Neeson has been unwilling to commit to a sequel but Kamen thinks the series would have to move in another direction. "How many times can she be taken? It's bad parenthood after that. Taken 3 is going to go in another direction. Should be interesting."

Taken 2 is in cinemas now. Read IGN's review.
