The Bunch is back, as CBS are developing a new version of the iconic and ever-popular The Brady Bunch.
Deadline broke the news, revealing Vince Vaughn came up with the idea and is among the executive producers of the potential half hour comedy, which will be written by Mike Mariano (Raising Hope, My Name is Earl).
As in the original, the story will focus on Mike Brady and his wife Carol, who both have children from previous marriages. But there will be some notable changes as well, beginning with Mike and Carol also having a child of their own together. (Yes, I wonder if that means there’s a seventh kid – dare they use the name Oliver?? – or do they make, say, Cindy or Bobby Mike and Carol’s biological child? Oh, the possibilities!) Also, in this version, both Mike and Carole are divorced and their ex-spouses will play a role in the story.
Deadline says the changes are meant to modernize the series – When the original Brady Bunch debuted in 1969, Mike Brady was a widower, but Carol’s first husband is notably never mentioned. The reason was that creator Sherwood Schwartz wanted Carole to be divorced, but ABC (who aired the original series) refused to allow it.
CBS TV Studios – who already have modernized versions of 90210 and Hawaii Five-0 on the air – will produce the new Brady Bunch. Besides Vaughn and Mariano, Victoria Vaughn, Peter Billingsley and Sherwood Schwartz’s son, Lloyd (who was involved in most previous Brady Bunch projects) will also executive produce.
This would be the first true start from scratch/TV reboot for the remarkably durable The Brady Bunch. There were numerous spinoffs and sequel series to the original, featuring various members of the original cast, including The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, The Brady Brides and The Bradys. And in the 1990s, there were two feature films (and a best forgotten TV movie third installment) that served as self-parodies, with new cast members playing the Brady Bunch as a modern family bizarrely obsessed with the fashion and pop culture of the 1970s.
And yes, Deadline says a new version of the oh-so famous Brady Bunch theme song is expected to be part of the new series, should it go forward.
But the bigger question is, will the kids still sing, as they did both in the original show and in the 1990s movies? As a big fan of A Very Brady Sequel, I sure hope so...
