We're big fans of director Joe Carnahan (The Grey, Narc) here at IGN, so we were pretty stoked to find out he was in the mix to direct Fox's long-gestating reboot of Daredevil. But there was a pretty big wrinkle in that original report, which was that Fox was under the gun to have Daredevil in production by October 10 or risk seeing the screen rights to the character revert back to Marvel.
How to Make a Daredevil Movie Not Suck
One report suggested that Marvel and Fox could do some horse-trading where Marvel would give Fox more time to make Daredevil in exchange for getting the rights back to Fantastic Four characters Galactus and the Silver Surfer. Another report claimed that Fox would rather lose Daredevil than give up such important characters to the Fantastic Four mythos, which they hope to reboot soon with Chronicle's Josh Trank directing,
Is a Daredevil Movie Better Off at Fox or Marvel?
Carnahan tweeted some discouraging statements tonight about Daredevil: "Think my idea for a certain retro, red-suited, Serpico-styled superhero went up in smoke today kids. ... We shall see. Time is NOT on anyone's side."
Does this mean Fox is giving up on Daredevil and letting the character go back to Marvel? Or are they going with a filmmaker other than Carnahan who could whip a Daredevil movie together in time to retain the rights and avoid having to give back any characters to Marvel? We'll know more in the days ahead.
