Every day hundreds of new apps make their debut on the App Store, and hundreds more are updated or reduced in price. We have sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention.
Forest Guardians – (Free)
Tower defense continues to be the App Store's most prolific genre, and Digitally Bold Games is the team stepping up to offer their interpretation this week. Forest Guardians shifts the setting to a colorful, cartoony woodland and casts you as a crafty fox:
Recess Riot – ($0.99)
Your break to play outside in the middle of the school day was never quite as crazy as this, as Recess Riot assaults a poor boy just trying to jump some rope with an onslaught of incoming balls. Do what you can to dodge and swat them out of the way, while not tripping over the constantly-swinging jumprope:
Lunar: Silver Star Story Touch – ($6.99)
Fans of traditional Japanese RPGs are in luck today, as the classic Lunar series now has representation in the App Store through this newly-released iOS port of Lunar: Silver Star Story. Expect turn-based battles, anime cutscenes and old-school charm.
Hotel Transylvania Dash Deluxe – ($2.99)
What happens when you mash up a long-running casual mobile game series with a new animated film just about to debut in theaters? Hotel Transylvania Dash. Keep those ghoulish guests happy:
Gangstar Rio: City of Saints – ($0.99)
The avalanche of major price cuts continues as the App Store reacts to the release of iOS 6 and prepares for iPhone 5's arrival, so we're bringing you another packed day of best bets. Gangstar Rio, Gameloft's GTA-alike, is back down to 99 cents.
Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation – (Free)
Also back under one buck is Gameloft's homage to Call of Duty.
Nightfall – ($0.99)
Inspired by Magic: The Gathering, the deck-building game Nightfall takes place in a world where the sun set – and then never rose again. Assemble your best set of cards to repel the forces of darkness for only 99 cents now.
Mass Effect Infiltrator – ($0.99)
BioWare's iOS tie-in to its popular home console trilogy has had several sales since its release, and now there's another one going on. It's down to 99 cents again, so take another look if you don't yet own this one.
Flick Champions – ($0.99)
Chillingo's suite of sports remade to be playable with quick finger flicks has gone free, almost exactly one year after its debut.
Space Inversion 2. – (Free)
Relive the glory days of Space Invaders in a slightly more modern form, for free.
Vay – (Free)
The same company that produced the Lunar: Silver Star Story port mentioned above cut their teeth with this other old-school RPG, and it's free right now if you'd like to give it a try before investing in Lunar.
Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy – ($2.99)
On sale for the first time since its debut earlier this year, Sky Gamblers will now let you take to the air for two dollars less.
Tiny Defense – (Free)
Little round robots blast each other to bits in this miniature wargame, free today.
Dead Rising Mobile – ($0.99)
And if you're just in the mood to torture yourself, why not "enjoy" the painful mess that is Dead Rising's mobile edition? (Just read the review first.)
N.O.V.A. 3 – ($6.99)
Finally, a notable software update. Gameloft's N.O.V.A. 3 has had voice chat added thanks to new Version 1.0.2.
That's all for today! If you haven't already, consider subscribing to the App Store Update via email. It's extra convenient!
