TV star Larry Hagman -- best known for playing one of the small screen's greatest villains, oil man J.R. Ewing on Dallas -- died Friday at his home in Texas, according to The Dallas Morning News. He was 81.
Hagman, who also starred on the famous 1960s sitcom I Dream of Jeannie, is said to have passed away from complications from his recent cancer treatment. His Dallas co-stars Linda Grey and Patrick Duffy were at his bedside when he died.
“Larry was back in his beloved Dallas, re-enacting the iconic role he loved most,” the family said in a statement. “Larry’s family and close friends had joined him in Dallas for the Thanksgiving holiday. When he passed, he was surrounded by loved ones. It was a peaceful passing, just as he had wished for. The family requests privacy at this time.”
Hagman, a Texas native, was the son of famed Broadway actress Mary Martin.
Hagman's other TV credits included stints on Nip/Tuck, Desperate Housewives, and Knots Landing (as J.R. Ewing). Hagman's film credits included Primary Colors, JFK, Nixon, Fail-Safe, The Eagle Has Landed, Harry & Tonto, and an appearance in Superman: The Movie.
