Angry Birds Movie Announced for 2016

After months of speculation, Angry Birds creator Rovio has officially confirmed that it is moving forward with a full-length animated movie. Despicable Me producer John Cohen has signed on to produce with Iron Man Executive Producer and former Chairman of Marvel Studios David Maisel signed on to executive produce.

“John’s an exceptionally talented producer, and we’re delighted to have him join the flock,” Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio Entertainment said in a statement. “With John’s hands-on producer background and David´s expertise in establishing and running his own successful studio, these two are the dream team for making a movie outside the studio system. Both professionals have the ideal skills and vision to achieve incredible things.”

The 3D CG-animated feature will be financed entirely by Rovio itself, allowing the film to be produced wholly outside of the studio system. For now a "Summer 2016" release has been earmarked.

“I’m so excited and honored to be working on this film with Mikael, David, and Rovio’s incredibly talented game developers and artists,” said Cohen. “From both an entertainment and strategic perspective, Rovio is at the forefront of game innovation and is trailblazing terrific new ways for Angry Birds fans to interact with these characters. I've personally spent countless hours playing the Angry Birds games over the last few years, which I can now happily justify as research for the movie."

The news comes on Angry Birds' third anniversary - the original Angry Birds hit the App Store exactly three years ago, on December 11 2009. Today's feature fim announcement is the culmination of Rovio's multimedia ambitions. In July 2011 the company changed its name from Rovio Mobile to Rovio Entertainment, a name that better reflected the company's desire to internally produce Angry Birds entertainment outside of the core mobile games.
