Though Jason Aaron departed Wolverine earlier this year and the series has sort of meandered along in his absence, Cullen Bunn has worked to tie up a few loose threads from Aaron's run and generally ensure that the book isn't drowned out by the numerous other Wolverine-centric comics on the market. Bunn has succeeded in that largely thankless task, and now he bids farewell to the ol' Canucklehead in a finale issue that caps off both his brief run and the series as a whole.
Bunn wraps up the conflict between Wolverine and his League of Not-So-Evil Exes on one side and the Covenant on the other. There's some stabbing and shooting and shots of Wolverine parading around in his goofy original costume. But Bunn punctuates all of that with some very effective emotional beats. The final interaction between Wolverine and the Dreaming Maiden is heartfelt and touching. The closing scene between Wolverine and his forgotten lover Melita is equally so. Bunn delivers a rare blend of action and emotion that so many Wolverine books strive for and fail.
Paul Pelletier helps close out the series in visual splendor. Whether his pages focus on surreal action or quiet emotion, Pelletier is more than up to the task of rendering any detail Bunn throws his way. The overall consistency of this issue suffers a bit with so many inkers on board, but the storytelling remains top notch regardless.
Bunn doesn't actually close his story as definitively as expected, but the flip side is that he leaves some strong material for either himself or another writer to tackle in the future.
