CES: Hands-on with Vizo's Tegra 4 Android Tablet

Along with its new Windows 8-based tablet, 4K displays, and touchscreen PCs, Vizio dropped a pair of Android tablets at CES today, including a 10.1-inch model powered by Nvidia's new Tegra 4 processor. While the model being demoed was merely a pre-production prototype, we got a chance to see the processor driving a high-resolution display first-hand. Vizio's 10.1-inch tablet uses a 2560 x 1600 high-pixel density display, which is slightly higher resolution than the retina display iPad.

The chassis combines plastic soft-touch backing with aluminum framing. Because the device was a prototype version, the build felt a little rough around the edges with a loose back panel and some deadspots on the display. In terms of sheer processing prowess, however, the benefit of the Tegra 4 was clear. The tablet was capable of quickly scrolling through images in the native 2560 x 1600 resolution with zero lag or delay. Unfortunately, we couldn't get a sense of how the tablet and the Tegra 4 performed when playing graphically-intense Android titles, as the only installed game was Fruit Ninja and it crashed repeatedly.

But again, this was an early prototype, and Vizio assures that it is not reflective of the final version. We weren't provided any insight as to when the Tegra 4-enabled Vizio 10.1-inch Tablet may hit store shelves or at what cost, but we'll be following this device closely.
