Comic Book Reviews for 1/9/13

Well, the moment Spider-fans have been anticipating/fearing has finally arrived. The Superior Spider-Man has made his official debut in a new series, and the reaction has been mixed, to say the least. Marvel also delivered the next chapters of some of Marvel NOW's best, including Thor: God of Thunder and Fantastic Four.

At DC, Grant Morrison delivered the penultimate chapter of his Action Comics run (while confirming that Superman was indeed killed by Doomsday in the New 52 continuity), Detective Comics got a Death of the Family tie-in, and the fantastic Sweet Tooth reached its end.

And finally, Dark Horse's new Star Wars book -- set directly after A New Hope -- delivered big time.

Action Comics #16

Written by Grant Morrison | Art by Brad Walker & Rags Morales

"Action Comics #16 represents the penultimate issue of Grant Morrison’s tenure on DC’s flagship Superman series. And like the 15 issues that preceded it, Action Comics #16 is an issue with both soaring highs and depressing lows. For starters, the book is a nightmare to figure out the timeline of events, as it jumps not only from past to present and back again, but also across universes – we revisit the old DCU timeline where Doomsday killed Superman. For newcomers to the DCU through the New 52, a lot of this issue will probably fly right over your head. While I have loved Morrison’s eccentric writing style for many years now, even I can step back and say that he might be biting off more than he can successfully chew as he charges like a screaming eagle towards his big finale." -Erik

Animal Man #16

Written by Jeff Lemire | Art by Various

"We’re four episodes in, and Rotworld is still engaged in rising action. Frankenstein and his crew push through to the final line of Arcane’s defenses, and the Baker family regains their humanity just in time to witness a horrifying scene. Readers who have stood by this title through its extended build-up are likely to appreciate the significant changes to power dynamics." -Poet

Detective Comics #16

Written by John Layman | Art by Jason Fabok

"At this point I'm pretty well fed up with books tying into Death of the Family. Joker must have a huge amount of free time if he can plan elaborate traps designed to psychologically torture each and every member of the Bat family. Luckily, Detective Comics takes a different approach from the rest. Instead of showcasing Joker himself, John Layman explores the ramifications of Joker's return to Gotham and the effect it's having on the more psychologically unhinged of Gotham's residents. It's a fun way to tie into the main event without sacrificing Layman's ability to tell his own story." -Jesse

Earth 2 #8

Written by James Robinson | Art by Yildiray Cinar

"James Robinson has been pretty vague as to what became of Steppenwolf following Batman's heroic sacrifice and the end of the Apokolips War in the first issue of Earth 2. Will the infamous warrior still have a part to play in the series, or does the promise of an even greater threat render him obsolete? Robinson answers that question very directly as he explores the current whereabouts of Steppenwolf in issue #8, which happens to be the most enjoyable of the series to date." -Jesse

Green Lantern: The New Guardians Annual #1

Written by Keith Giffen | Art by Scott Kolins & Andrei Bressan

"I really hope this is just a blip on the New Guardians radar. I don’t think I could stand another early life identity crisis for a New 52 title. The first annual for Green Lantern: New Guardians is basically one (very) long shill for an upcoming title." -Poet

The Phantom Stranger #4

Written by Dan DiDio & J.M. DeMatteis | Art by Various

"The Phantom Stranger has consistently been one of the weakest books in DC's lineup since it launched, and yet I keep returning every month. Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment. Or maybe I see the spark of potential within this book. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for anything resembling a Trinity War prologue. Whatever the case, the waiting finally paid off somewhat. Phantom Stranger receives a much-needed injection of life as a new co-writer comes on board in issue #4." -Jesse

Stormwatch #16

Written by Peter Milligan | Art by Various

"You can't really blame Harry Tanner for trying to eliminate Midnighter in the current arc of Stormwatch. If I were trying to disguise myself and secretly assume control of a team full of sci-fi heroes, I wouldn't want a guy with the combined skills of Batman and Taskmaster mucking things up either. The premise of Betrayal is solid enough in that sense, if a little cliched. The execution is where the arc is more uneven. Peter Milligan is doing a fine job juggling his various characters, but the writing veers towards melodrama far too often." -Jesse

Swamp Thing #16

Written by Scott Snyder | Art by Yanick Paquette

"Scott Snyder loves to toy with his reader's emotions. One minute he’s giving us this kick-ass, fist pumping sequence where we think things are finally turning around for the better for our heroes, only to pull the rug out from under our feet the next minute and make our hearts sink. That’s Swamp Thing #16 in a nutshell." -Erik

Sweet Tooth #40

Written by Jeff Lemire | Art by Jeff Lemire

"A book like Sweet Tooth #40 is the very reason I love serial storytelling. Over the course of 40 issues and nearly four years, Jeff Lemire has built a deep narrative and mythology that all builds to this very issue. Issue #40 is 100% payoff; we get to see where all of these characters ended up and how their experiences changed them forever. Despite Sweet Tooth being, at times, an emotionally challenging experience, the series conclusion will no doubt leave you with a newfound appreciation for those your closest too and the inherent joy of being around friends and family." -Joey
