Del Toro Explains GLaDOS Voice in Pacific Rim

Indeed, it has now been confirmed that GLaDOS voice actress Ellen McLain is providing her vocals as the disembodied A.I. for Pacific Rim. However, director Guillermo del Toro has now stated that the voice is merely a nod to the Portal franchise and will likely be downplayed for the final film.

"I wanted very much to have her, because I'm a big Portal fan. But just as a wink," Del Toro explained to the Toronto Sun. "She's not cake-obsessed. She's not out to destroy humanity."

Although he did get Valve's permission to use the familiar GLaDOS voice for the trailer, Del Toro added that McLain's voice will eventually be modulated somewhat. "The filter we're using is slightly less GLaDOS. Slightly. The one in the trailer I wanted to be full-on GlaDOS," he said.

So it sounds like the GLaDOS A.I. isn't a direct representation from the renowned Portal antagonist, rather a tip of the hat. Nevertheless, it's a nice touch for fans of the games.

Meanwhile, Del Toro said that his own video game project inSANE is still moving forward. The project was dropped last year by publisher THQ after facing financial troubles, but it sounds like things are finally looking up. "We are in talks with a very, very big company. I can't say who, but it's one of the big ones. They really responded to the game, they responded to what we were trying.

"Some of the devices of the game I need to update, because now I've seen them in other games that just came out," he continued. "That always happens. But the principle we're trying to do with the game is to make it a really immersive narrative experience. It's still a really challenging proposal."

Pacific Rim hits theaters on July 12.
