UPDATE: It seems that yesterday's theory was correct and that Final Fantasy: All The Bravest will release on iOS tomorrow.
While Square Enix wasn't planning on making an announcement until January 17, it's already that date in New Zealand, which is where the game has cropped up on the App Store.
The game reunites the familiar Active Time Battle system with some of the largest parties in Final Fantasy history. You can unlock over 20 different classic FF classes as you progress through the game including warrior, monk and red mage. An additional 35 named premium characters can also be purchased. Original story follows.
ORIGINAL STORY: RPG fans have spotted a mysterious teaser page on Square-Enix's Japanese official website. The page is empty, save for a cryptic image and "1.17" (January 17) in big bold letters:
Eagle-eyed gamers first made the connection to the beloved Final Fantasy franchise by realizing that the large silhouettes were none other than the Behemoth, the perennial Final Fantasy boss (and sometimes summon). The smaller silhouettes have also been identified as Final Fantasy character classes, most notably the Black Mage and his iconic pointy hat. Even the teaser page's URL (ff_atb) seems to point to a Final Fantasy connection.
A peak at the page's source code confirms the initial suspicion. The page includes a link to the Japanese iOS App Store linking to a game called "Final Fantasy: All The Bravest." The App Store link doesn't work at the moment, but will presumably go live this Thursday, when the game launches.
IGN has requested additional information from Square-Enix on this fresh Final Fantasy title.
