Guillermo del Toro Still Thinks Mountains of Madness Will Happen

When chatting with Guillermo del Toro the other day, I made the mistake of assuming H. P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness was his "dream" project. He quickly corrected me: Frankenstein takes that spot, and Mountains is his second dream project. Got that? So it shouldn't be much of a surprise to hear that the film -- which came very close to getting made at Universal a couple of years back -- may still happen for the Pacific Rim and Hellboy filmmaker.

I sat down with del Toro to talk about Mama, the new ghost movie he produced which hits next week, but during the conversation we touched on his hopes for Mountains of Madness and what else he has lined up in the near future. GDT is known for his enthusiastic embrace of lots of different projects, many of which wind up falling by the wayside eventually. As a result, he appears to be approaching things with a more measured attitude lately (a que sera, sera approach, he says)… and yet, in our conversation (embedded below), he mentions the upcoming TV version of his book trilogy The Strain, the haunted house movie Crimson Peak, several animated flicks, and a Pinocchio movie. And I didn't even get a chance to ask about Hellboy 3!

Watch the full video above, where del Toro talks about his pending slate, as well as how his previous concerns about Ridley Scott's Prometheus making At the Mountains of Madness redundant have proven unwarranted ("We were there first!"), how close he came to making the film before Universal pulled the plug in 2011, and how he thinks it still could end up being made as a coproduction with that studio.

And then also check out what he had to say about Dark Universe, the DC Comics movie he hopes to make featuring supernatural characters including John Constantine, Swamp Thing, The Spectre, Zatanna and more:
