Armed with a dapper Justin Timberlake and a new streamlined aesthetic, the new Myspace has moved out of the closed beta stage of its development and its doors have been thrown open to the public. Visitors to new.myspace.com will be greeted by a black tie clad Timberlake and will have the opportunity to stream his new single “Suit & Tie” upon registering. Timberlake, a majority shareholder in Myspace stock, has a vested interest in the site’s rebirth and from the looks of it, they’re hoping to capitalize on his return to music after a seven year hiatus.
Myspace has struggled to maintain relevance in an increasingly competitive social media landscape and the relaunch will focus on Myspace’s origins as a means of combining social networking and music. In recent years, the site has floundered in the face of Facebook and Twitter and the new and improved Myspace is aiming to create its own niche by filling a void in the musical media arena. COO Chris Vanderhook told CNET that “there is a huge gap that we wanted to fulfill” left by services like Pandora and Spotify.
The revamped Myspace will allow users to create and publicly share playlists, advertise their musical interests, and generate stations à la Pandora.
