Valve ‘Steam Box’ Console Reportedly Uses Linux

Valve has reportedly revealed new details about its upcoming console. According to a report from the ESHM 2012 conference in Berlin last month, Valve electronics engineer Ben Krasnow has revealed that the console affectionately nicknamed the Steam Box will be unveiled some time in 2013 and will run on Linux.

The report adds that the Steam Box reveal could come as soon as the Game Developers Conference in March or at E3 2013 in June.

Last month, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell said Valve wants to compete directly with consoles and elaborated on the company’s plans. In the past, Valve has also made efforts to support Linux and hinted at a hardware beta in 2013.

We’ve reached out to Valve to clarify and will update this story with any comment we receive.
