Argo, Skyfall, Wreck-It Ralph Among Weekend Award Winners

As we get closer to the Oscars, the film industry holds more and more awards shows. This weekend saw several winners announced in different prestigious competitions.

The biggest news is Argo's Ben Affleck winning the top feature film prize from the Directors Guild of America. This is normally a safe indication that this same director will win the Best Director Oscar, except Affleck wasn't even nominated for an Academy Award. That means the Best Director Oscar race is up for grabs between Amour (Michael Haneke), Beasts of the Southern Wild (Benh Zeitlin), Life of Pi (Ang Lee), Silver Linings Playbook (David O. Russell), and Lincoln (Steven Spielberg).

The Annie Awards celebrating the year's best animated movies honored Disney's video game valentine Wreck-It Ralph with five awards, including the top prize of best animated feature. It also won best director for Rich Moore, writing, music and voice acting (Alan Tudyk's King Candy).

The Annies also honored ParaNorman (character animation, character design), Brave (editing, production design), and Rise of the Guardians (animated effects, storyboarding). Best Animated Short went to Disney's Paperman.

Finally, the Art Directors Guild announced winners of its 17th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards. Winner for excellence in production design for a period film went to Anna Karenina (production designer Sarah Greenwood), best fantasy film went to Life of Pi (David Gropman), and best contemporary film was awarded to Skyfall (production designer Dennis Gassner).

The Academy Awards air February 24.
