Eli Roth – producer of The Last Exorcism – attended Glasgow FrightFest at the weekend to screen his forthcoming disaster movie Aftershock. And while there, he also talked about The Last Exorcism Part II, a film that continues the story of Nell, the girl who was so horrifically possessed in the first film.
This is what Eli had to say…
“The first one we did for a million-and-a-half dollars. We weren’t thinking about a sequel when we called it The Last Exorcism. Obviously. But as soon as it opened – and it opened at number one here in the UK, everyone asked ‘What’s the sequel?’
“We knew that we wanted to continue the story, but we couldn’t do another docu-style movie. What were we going to do? Another crew goes to find what happened? That wasn’t really the movie that we wanted to see.
“Then I thought what if we do a straight narrative movie – like a traditional narrative. And we follow Nell. Ashley Bell was such a find and such a wonderful actress. And we just loved the scene where she was doing freaky possession sh*t. Anything where she was twitching her face – we couldn’t get enough of it. And I want to see a movie of that, but how do we do that? I thought what if we continue the story following her, but the first movie exists, kind of like as a YouTube viral video. That way other people in the movie could run in and say ‘Aw, you’re that chick – break your fingers! Do the back-bend thing!’ Kind of in the same position as the audience.
“We also started thinking about what if this thing was following you and wanted to possess you, and you started to embrace that. And you think ‘This isn’t so bad. I could do lots of damage like this.’
“So we found a director named Ed Gass-Donnelly, who is a Canadian guy who made a movie called Small Town Murder Songs that was doing the festival circuit. Starring Peter Stormare – very elegant, really well done. And where Daniel Stamm – the director of the first movie – loves Lars Von Trier and wanted to make a film like The Idiots, after the movie he jumped on a number of different projects so wasn’t available – we found Ed.
“And Ed loves Roman Polanski and The Shining. And we were like ‘I want to shoot this like Rosemary’s Baby.’ Classical photography. He had lots and lots of great ideas to make a really fun, creepy, scary movie.”
The Last Exorcism Part II hits U.S screens on Friday and the rest of the world later in the year.
