Producers Want Sam Mendes For Bond 24

While travelling from London to Edinburgh on the newly launched Skyfall train, we caught up with producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli to discuss the future of the franchise and whether or not Sam Mendes will return as director.

IGN: How do you top Skyfall with Bond 24?

Michael G. Wilson: I have no idea!

Barbara Broccoli: It’s very difficult. The key thing for us is Daniel Craig, who I think has brought a tremendous amount to the films. His reinterpretation of the character is very contemporary. I think he pushes the envelope, he manages to be very dangerous and yet have tremendous humanity. He’s our secret weapon. Then of course the challenge is to create a story that is worthy of him. And a story that explores Bond’s emotional life and takes him emotionally to places that he hasn’t been to before. And then pits him up against a contemporary villain. We always look at what the world is afraid of then try to create a villain that is the physical interpretation of that fear. That’s where we start. Then writers create a script. Then we get a director on. With each person they bring another layer of complexity and talent.

IGN: So do you think Sam Mendes has another Bond movie in him?

Broccoli: Oh my God yes. Aree you kidding me?

Wilson: Absolutely.

Broccoli: He’s got a lot of great movies left in him, and hopefully another Bond at least.

IGN: Have you talked to him about Bond 24 yet?

Wilson: Well it’s early days, we’re just still marketing this one. We want to talk to him about it soon.

IGN: Why was now the right time to bring back Miss Moneypenny and what did Naomie Harris bring to the role?

Broccoli: Naomie’s an extraordinarily actress and she’s got a lot of guts. She challenges Bond as a woman, and as a fellow agent. It’s one of the most beloved characters in the series, and it was a very difficult decision to find someone who would give a new interpretation and spin on the character. We’ve loved her work for many, many years. She and Daniel have a wonderful chemistry onscreen.

IGN: What about Q?

Wilson: Bringing Ben Whishaw in as Q – that was a decision to bring the character back but to make him more youthful – like the way the character would be today. And the same with Naomie – a person who started in the field, then went into retirement to be M’s assistant. That’s the backstory that we thought would be interesting.

IGN: So will Monepenny be back in the field as Naomie Harris seemed unsure of her character’s future when we spoke?

Broccoli: What do you think? Do you think you can keep her tied behind a desk?

Wilson: A good-looking, gun-toting chick? What’s not to love?

Skyfall is out now on Blu-ray and DVD.
