Apple IDs Finally Offer Two-Step Verification Security

Starting now, you can finally add a little extra security to your Apple ID. Two-step verification, which requires a code validation sent to a trusted device, is available for all Apple account holders in the US, UK, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand. As reported by 9to5Mac, you'll need to log into the Apple ID site to make the changes.

Once you're logged in, head to the "Password & Security" tab. There's a prompt to guide you through two-step verification, and the entire process is fairly simple. Afterward, using your Apple account on a new device will require validation with a code sent to a secondary device, like an iPhone.

Apple has taken its sweet time getting two-step out the door. Google has offered the service for a couple of years now, and even smaller tech services like Dropbox have offered the service for almost a year.

But before you rush right into the wonderful world of enhanced security features, there are a couple things to keep in mind. First, Apple may ask you to change your password when setting up two-step verification. If so, you'll also have to wait three whole days before coming back and setting everything up. Yes, it's dumb, but Apple claims it's a security necessity.

Secondly, make sure you hold onto that Recovery Key generated during the two-step setup. If you forget your Apple ID password, and you've lost the Recovery Key, you're up the creek. According to Apple, the company will no longer reset your password for you. You've been warned.
