Evil Dead Sequels in the Works

There could be two Evil Dead sequels in the works.

First up, a sequel to the brand-new Evil Dead is already gestating. Speaking to Bloody Disgusting at SXSW, the film's writer Rodo Sayagues revealed that he was already working on the sequel.

"Fede [Alvarez, the film's director] and I are writing that now," said Sayagues. "We are in a very preliminary phase of that project, but yes we’re working on it. And it’s not gonna be a remake of the second Evil Dead. It’s going to directly follow this one and is going to be a whole different story."

When asked if the sequel would possess a more comedic tone like the original Evil Dead 2, he responded by saying, "I think it’s going to be more like the second half of this film. It’s going to be more over the top. The escalation is going to continue."

Furthermore, he confirmed that the mooted sequel would centre on Jane Levy's character Mia.

That's it for the first sequel (yes, this is confusing). But what about the sequel in the core franchise that Sam Raimi mentioned last week while promoting his latest movie, Oz: The Great and The Powerful. If you missed it, he said, "I would love to make Evil Dead 4. My brother and I plan to work on the script this summer."

Speaking to ComingSoon, Rob Tapert – Raimi's partner in Ghost House Pictures – has spoken more about the project, even clarifying what that project would be called.

"That would be 'Army of Darkness 2,'" he said. "Everybody calls it 'Evil Dead 4' but 'Army of Darkness' wasn't called 'Evil Dead' anywhere except by the fans."

Meanwhile, series star Bruce Campbell has been talking about this latest development at the SXSW festival. It's fair to say he's been here before and remains sceptical:

"Sam threatens this every six months," said Campbell. "I've heard this a thousand times, because in the back of his mind, he never wants to let go, because he loved making these movies. We all loved making them together. They were a nightmare to make, very difficult, but they lasted the test of time, so he's not going to let that go, and I'm never going to say 'no.' It'll be me and a walker fighting some other old guy. But that's what he does and who knows? It may happen."

Either way, IGN saw the new Evil Dead over the weekend and loved it. Read the review here.
