Pete's Dragon to Take Flight Again

Pete’s Dragon could be set to take to the skies once more, with Disney preparing a remake of the 1977 movie that mixed live-action with animation.

According to Deadline, the studio has hired David Lowery – who had a hit at Sundance with gritty drama All Them Bodies Saints – to pen the script with his writing partner Toby Halbrook.

The original Pete’s Dragon was a musical which was set in the early 20th century and followed the adventures of orphan Pete and fire-breathing dragon Elliott. It starred Mickey Rooney, Shelly Winters, Jim Dale and Red Buttons.

According to Deadline however, the new Pete will be the loosest of remakes, with the writers reinventing the film’s core story and dropping the musical element.

Chris Tilly is the Entertainment Editor for IGN in the UK and watched Pete's Dragon religiously as a kid thanks to his brother being obsessed with it. You'd be best advised to follow him on both Twitter and MyIGN.
