Sonic Dash Endless Runner Out Tonight

Even though last year's Sonic Jump was totally fun, mobile gamers were upset that the game focused solely on jumping instead of, you know... running - the one thing Sonic is ostensibly supposed to do in any video game he stars in. Sega is finally rectifying this egregious error tonight with the release of Sonic Dash on the App Store.

The game, created by Sega's UK studio Hardlight, is probably best described as a Sonic-ified version of Temple Run. The camera is oriented behind the Blue Blur. Players can swipe left or right to switch between three lanes, swipe down to dash through enemies or under obstacles and swipe up to jump.

There are no levels - like all endless runners players simply have to keep Sonic alive as long as possible to beat their friends and climb the global leaderboards. The rings players collect on each run can be spent on power-ups like revive tokens, coin magnets, distance-skipping headstarts and more. Amy, Tails and Knuckles are also available for purchase.

IGN will have a full review of Sonic Dash soon. My initial snap judgment is mixed. The game's production values are very high - that trademark fast-paced Sonic look and feel is out in full force and still feels great. But some of the deaths feel cheap. It doesn't feel good when a lengthy run is ended by an enemy that was lurking just behind another obstacle, our of sight. The emphasis on purchasable power-ups also feels a little heavy-handed, although more play time will determine if they truly unbalance the experience.

Sonic Dash launches for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch this Thursday, March 7 for $1.99.
