Star Trek 3 Release Date Chatter

It's been almost four years since J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot was released in 2009. And while we're finally getting a sequel to the new adventures of Kirk and Spock this summer with Star Trek Into Darkness, four years is a long time to wait in the modern franchise age. But Trek producer Bryan Burk is now saying that we may not have to sweat it out in our Starfleet tunics for quite that long before the inevitable Star Trek 3 hits.

Digital Spy spoke with Burk recently, with the outlet raising the point that 2016 will mark the 50th anniversary of Star Trek. Does that mean that Paramount is looking to release Star Trek 3 to capitalize on the anniversary?

"We're definitely talking about the next one, but we haven't talked about a release date," says Burk. "We don't want to wait four years, the same amount of time between the last one and this one, but it's going to be a big year to celebrate, hopefully."

Of course, complicating the matter is the fact that Abrams has a little movie called Star Wars: Episode VII that he'll be working on next. That film, last we heard, was scheduled for a 2015 release, which would mean bringing Abrams back to the director's chair for a 2016 Trek 3 would probably be tough in terms of scheduling. What do you guys think? Would you rather wait for Abrams to direct Star Trek 3, even if it takes another four years? Or should a new director take over with Abrams producing in order to hit that 2016 date?
