The Avengers #7 Review

The crap is hitting the fan again. That's the good news. After a few character focused issues, we are back into “oh no, the universe is ending!” territory and this series is better for it. Avengers still isn't a “traditional” superhero book, and it features less assembling to punch bad guys and more planning, training, and reacting, but that is also not entirely a bad thing. The truth is, action fans looking to see their favorite heroes team up are simply better served elsewhere. Avengers is a heady book that requires a big-picture mindset and a commitment to the long haul.

Since this is a Jonathan Hickman book, characters often say things like “the machine is broken!” and “the last white event!” This is basically the opposite of a character driven story; it's a massive scale epic where our heroes act as cogs in a (broken) machine that is turning with or without them. This is not to say that Hickman doesn't have a strong feel for his leads, because he does, but there's a lot of story here and very little human element. It's interesting stuff, but it'd be nice to spend a little time with the Avengers in an Avengers comic book.

Dustin Weaver steps in to the art shoes on this issue, and he does some really solid work. His storytelling is clear and nicely structured, serving Hickman's widescreen, epic script very well. There are times when his characters look a bit too stiff and posed, however; especially in the scenes featuring everyday folks. His superheroes, on the other hand, look fantastic. Hopefully we'll get some more Cap and Iron Man suiting up for action in coming issues, because they look ready badass and ready to rumble.
