Twitter acquired TweetDeck back in 2011, and since then, the service has grown as a way to organize tweets into manageable threads and lists. But according to a post today (via The Next Web) the social network will kill off TweetDeck on mobile devices and Facebook as of May.
"To continue to offer a great product that addresses your unique needs, we’re going to focus our development efforts on our modern, web-based versions of TweetDeck," reads the TweetDeck blog. "To that end, we are discontinuing support for our older apps: TweetDeck AIR, TweetDeck for Android, and TweetDeck for iPhone."
The move to discontinue TweetDeck for mobile devices comes at a time when Twitter has grown increasingly protective of its API, forcing token limits upon competitive services like Tweetbot. According to the blog post, Twitter appears to be pushing TweetDeck mobile users over to its own first-party Twitter apps.
"Over the past few years, we’ve seen a steady trend towards people using TweetDeck on their computers and Twitter on their mobile devices," adds the post. "This trend coincides with an increased investment in Twitter for iPhone and Twitter for Android -- adding photo filters and other editing capabilities, revamping user profiles, and enhancing search."
Twitter also mentioned that TweetDeck's mobile apps rely on Twitter's version 1.0 API, which is phasing out this month. Desktops clients, as of this writing, should continue to work. The mobile and AIR versions of TweetDeck will go dark in May. Additionally, the removal of TweetDeck functionality from Facebook is yet another incidence of the two social media giants poking -- sorry -- at one another.
