Why Nvidia isn't Powering the PlayStation 4

Sony officially announced earlier this month that its graphics for the PS4 would be handled by AMD, but rival company Nvidia tells Gamespot that the company passed up on the opportunity because working on the console was something the company "didn't want to do the business at the price those guys were willing to pay."

"In the end, you only have so many engineers and so much capability, and if you're going to go off and do chips for Sony or Microsoft, then that's probably a chip that you're not doing for some other portion of your business," says Nvidia SVP of content Tony Tomasi.

The two graphics companies have been duking it out for the past year, and entangled in a nasty lawsuit that alleges former AMD executives joined up with Nvidia and offered proprietary secrets to gain an edge. Rumors have swirled that AMD has boxed its rival out of the console game entirely, picking up Xbox 720 business as well. It's a Hail Mary from the company, which posted a dismal quarterly loss of $131 million compared to Nvidia's profit of $174 million. Whatever the dealings behind closed doors, Tomasi insists that the decision for Sony (and perhaps Microsoft) to side with AMD has nothing to do with technology.

"We're building a whole bunch of stuff, and we had to look at console business as an opportunity cost."
