Are These TV's Most Influential Shows?

Star Trek, The Simpsons and Homeland have made a list of the most influential TV shows of the last 50 years, but there's no place for the likes of Doctor Who or Lost.

Compiled by Swiss ratings experts The WIT, a programme was selected from each year, the criteria being that they either made their mark abroad or had a huge impact at home.

Children’s shows Sesame Street, Rugrats and Dragon Ball all made the cut, while reality TV features prominently via the likes of The Real World, Survivor, Big Brother and The Voice.

But the BBC is conspicuously absent from the list, with The WIT’s Virginia Mouseler telling The Mail “We really wanted to put Doctor Who top of the list. But as the BBC wouldn’t give us the rights to show a clip on the website, we had to replace it with Astro Boy, which was created in the same year.

“It was a great shame. UK viewers may also be disappointed we couldn’t include Top of the Pops, which obviously had a massive impact. Sadly we couldn’t persuade the BBC to change their minds.”

So what do you think of the below list? And are you annoyed by the lack of Lost, 24, The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones? Let us know your thoughts, and alternate suggestions, in the comments below.
