C2E2: Dark Horse Continues the Halo Saga

Practically every major gaming franchise has seen a comic book tie-in at one point or another. Halo is no exception. Marvel Comics has published a number of high-profile Halo projects since 2006, including side-stories like Halo: Uprising and Halo: Helljumpers and an extended adaptation of the Halo: Fall of Reach novel.

But now the license has found a new home at Dark Horse. They're no stranger to video game adaptations either, as they currently publish comics based on the Mass Effect universe and the Last of Us prequel, American Dreams.

The first project to come form this new arrangement will be Halo: Initiation. This Halo 4 prequel mini-series will focus on the character Sarah Palmer as it explores her journey from ODST trooper to commander in the UNSC's Spartan-IV program. The series will be written by Halo veteran Brian Reed, who worked as a writer on Halo 4 and also penned the Fall of Reach adaptation for Marvel. Joining Reed will be artist Marco Castiello (Star Wars: Purge).

"A rich science fiction universe driven by compelling characters, Halo has all the makings for show-stopping comics, " said Editor Dave Marshall in Dark Horse's press release. "In Initiation, Brian and Marco are delivering an action-packed thrill-ride with a beating heart of authentic human drama." Meanwhile, Reed commented, “It’s really exciting to work with Dark Horse in continuing the Halo story in comics. After Halo 4 and Spartan Ops, fans wanted to know more about the origins of the Spartan-IV program and Sarah Palmer in particular. So it’s great fun to be able to grant those wishes with a partner like Dark Horse.”

Wired also debuted a preview of the interior art form the first issue:

Halo: Initiation #1 is scheduled to ship on August 14.
