Earth 2 #11 Review

I love what Earth 2 strives to be, but I hate that it never quite reaches it. Nicola Scott’s engrossing artwork makes each page a visual feast with all manner of magical monsters and epic confrontations, but the narrative text that accompanies those images robs them of their awe-factor. The last page reveal should have given me chills because it looks so glorious, but the execution of the story made the moment fall flat.

My biggest hangup has to be the dialogue. This story is driven completely by what the characters are saying with no narration, so every word balloon is chock-full of background information, character motivations, and plot explanations. Readers, of course, need to be reminded of what’s going on, but the way it’s done here does not sound like how people actually talk. As far as the plot goes, it has slowed to a crawl and only manages to take one meaningful step forward after 20 pages.

Orion had an unforgettable debut in the pages of Wonder Woman, but now the New 52 New Gods are just being unceremoniously thrown into DC’s books. The gatefold cover reveals the arrival of a pair of New Gods within this issue, but their presence feels tacked on instead of being a natural part of the story. Their debut here might have bigger ramifications later on, but there’s so much to worry about in this issue already that it’s hard to muster any excitement for what may or may not happen down the line.
