Johnny Depp Headed Into the Woods for Disney

Disney is reportedly in talks with their Pirates of the Caribbean and Lone Ranger star Johnny Depp to topline their big screen version of Stephen Sondheim's Broadway musical Into the Woods.

Depp would join Meryl Streep in the film, with the latter circling the role of the evil witch. Depp worked with the director, Rob Marshall, on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Depp also previously starred in another film version of a Sondheim musical, Sweeney Todd.

As Variety reminds us, "Musical revolved around a childless baker and his wife who attempt to lift a family curse by journeying into the woods to confront the witch that put the spell on them. Along the way, they encounter Rapunzel, Cinderella, 'Jack and the Beanstalk’s' Jack Little, Red Riding Hood and other classic fairy tale characters."

No word yet on when production might begin.
