Jonathan Hickman Brings the Avengers to Infinity

Age of Ultron only launched a month ago, but Marvel hasn't been shy about revealing what's coming up at the end of this event comic and beyond. We already know to expect a surprising new guest star in Age of Ultron #10. We also know that a new ongoing series called Avengers A.I. will spin out of Age of Ultron in July. Now Marvel is looking beyond Age of Ultron entirely and revealing their next big event storyline for 2013.

As USA Today revealed this morning, this event will be called Infinity. This six-issue mini-series will be written by Jonathan Hickman and drawn by Jim Cheung, Jerome Opena, and Dustin Weaver. The story officially kicks off with the previously announced Infinity one-shot special that Marvel is releasing on Free Comic Book Day (May 4), while the main mini-series will launch in August.

As various creators and editors have been hinting for a while, this new event will be more cosmic in scope and build on developments in books like Avengers, New Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova, and Thanos Rising. The premise of the story appears to be two-fold. On one hand, the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy will be venturing into space in the hope of uniting the Skrulls, Kree, and Brood against a race of all-powerful beings called the Builders. Already glimpsed in the pages of Avengers, The Builders are a race of beings who create life on various worlds and have decided to target Earth for destruction.

On the other, Thanos will be taking advantage of Earth's lack of heroes to launch his own invasion. Hickman will be laying the groundwork for Thanos' role with the FCBD issue. "The universe's greatest serial killer is cut loose to do bad things to our most precious world," Hickman told USA Today.

Both of Hickman's Avengers titles will serve as direct tie-ins to Infinity. While Avengers looks to be fleshing out the cosmic aspect of the story, New Avengers will focus more on Thanos and the struggle of Earth's remaining heroes to fend off his invasion. "Somebody like Daredevil, who's used to dealing with more street-level problems, has to suddenly face foes and situations that are a little bit out of his ordinary weight class," said Executive Editor Tom Brevoort.

Infinity will also see Hickman continue his work with the Inhumans that began in his Fantastic Four run. Whether they'll actually be allies to the Avengers and Guardians, however, is being made purposely vague. "They're not like a team of superheroes. They're a demographic — being an Inhuman is like being Cuban, like being Irish," Brevoort said. "Within that strata, there are good guys and bad guys and bystanders and guys who just want to do their job and go home and drink an Inhuman Löwenbräu and kick back."

We expect to hear plenty more about Infinity as FCBD looms and the convention season heats up. Stay tuned to IGN Comics for more on Marvel's newest event comic.
