Lionhead Studios today appointed John Needham as its new studio head, filling the position left empty when Peter Molyneux departed the company in March 2012 to found 22Cans.
Needham will report into Phil Harrison, vice president of Microsoft's interactive entertainment business, and will be responsible for the day-to-day management of Lionhead Studios.
This is a historic time in our industry and I’m excited, and honoured, to be joining Lionhead and Microsoft Studios.
In a career spanning 12 years, Needham's previous roles include being CEO of both Cryptic Studios, best know for superhero MMOs City of Heroes and Champions Online and, most recently, Gazillion Entertainment, currently working on the Marvel Heroes MMO.
"This is a historic time in our industry and I’m excited, and honoured, to be joining Lionhead and Microsoft Studios," he said. "Our vision is focused on building innovative gaming services and AAA experiences at Lionhead, and the rest of Microsoft Studios, which take advantage of Microsoft’s incredible hardware and software platforms. Personally, I can’t wait to get started."
There's been multiple rumblings of late that Lionhead is hard at work on a Fable MMO for the next-generation Xbox, which this appointment seems to lend credence to. With E3 just around the corner, hopefully all will become clear soon.
