Microsoft's Xbox Team Allegedly Working on Smartwatch Prototype

Earlier this week, we reported that Microsoft was allegedly developing a new smartwatch to compete with similarly rumoured devices from companies like Apple, Google, and Samsung. An unnamed source recently told The Verge that the teams behind Microsoft’s Xbox accessories, including the Kinect sensor, are working on a smartwatch prototype. The rumoured smartwatch may have began its life as a heart rate monitor to pair with the Xbox but sources are claiming that Microsoft has diverted its resources to developing a wearable device that can stand on its own.

Since the device is still very much in the prototype phase, Microsoft is bouncing around a variety of ideas for its next wearable mobile product, after laying SPOT to rest five years ago. The source familiar with Microsoft's supply chain broke the news that the company had ordered component parts for a wrist-worn device with a 1.5 inch touchscreen display. According to The Verge's source, the watch will come equipped with removable bands and one prototype features a magnetic power connector similar to the one used on the Surface line of tablets. Devices go through many permutations before the end of the prototype stage, so it's important to take these rumours with a massive grain of salt for the time being.
