Nintendo Direct and 3DS Showcase: Prediction Time!

While things have been rather quiet on the Wii U front - save a stray Toki Tori and LEGO here and there - when it comes to portables, Nintendo has been kicking butt and taking names. The 3DS software library is on fire, and recent releases like the masterful Fire Emblem Awakening (check out our full review here) and the ridiculously enjoyable Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (full review here) have made it hard to put the system down.

And yet it seems things will only keep getting better. Nintendo recently announced not only a 3DS showcase, where members of the press will have a chance to check out a variety of 3DS software, but also a 3DS-focused Nintendo Direct – and it’s all happening tomorrow.

We’ll know early Wednesday morning what the Direct broadcast is all about (it’s airing at 7:00am PST). The next day you’ll be hearing our impressions on what we saw at the 3DS showcase. But tomorrow just isn’t soon enough, is it? After all, half the fun of game announcements is speculating about what they’ll contain beforehand – getting your hopes and expectations so high that nothing could possibly satisfy you. Far be it for us to deny your inalienable gamer right to hypothesize.

Enter: our predictions. Below are a few ideas we have about what Nintendo may have up its sleeve for tomorrow. Take a look, then chime in with your own predictions in the comments at the bottom of the page!

Very Likely

Given the close proximity of a few 3DS titles (cough, Animal Crossing, cough), it would almost be absurd if Nintendo didn’t show them off during tomorrow’s event. I mean, really now. Animal Crossing: New Leaf releases in North America in less than two months, on June 9, yet U.S. gamers have still barely seen more than a handful of trailers for the game. It’s time to show off Nook’s new digs, let us have a gander at K.K.’s club, and see what this new town (and our new role as mayor) is all about.

Along the same lines, it’s not too much of a stretch to say that LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins will make an appearance too, given it launches this Sunday. Following next month is Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, hitting store shelves on May 24. Maybe we’ll finally get more details for this 3D port, such as how multilayer will work and if there will be any new features or even new levels to explore.

Otherwise, it’s also possible summer titles like Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and Mario Golf: World Tour will be on show. Those are still a ways out, so they may not make the 3DS showcase - but we’re hopeful they’ll at least make an appearance in the Nintendo Direct broadcast. It’s the year of Luigi, after all! Throw in some third party offerings like Project X Zone (heading our way June 25), and that's already a pretty solid set of offerings.

So many Weegees!!!

Now to get just a tiny bit more outlandish…

Totally Possible

Holding a whole Nintendo Direct and a special, all-day showcase seems like a whole lot of hoopla for there to not be a new announcement of some kind, whether it be some release dates or even… gasp… a new game or two. If we're being realistic (read: boring), we probably shouldn’t get our hopes too high on the new game announcement front. However, it's not completely unreasonable to expect to find out exactly when Mario Golf and perhaps even Mario & Luigi will be arriving.

Otherwise, while not as safe a bet as the previously mentioned games, it’s not crazy to imagine we could find out about some new game localizations (like Fantasy Life), or just have a look at some as-of-yet unseen third party software (like LEGO Marvel Super Heroes). Or hey, maybe we’ll get updates on previously announced eShop titles like Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse or Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move.

More Minis, please.

But those predictions are still within the realm of reason. Let’s leave that realm, shall we, and get really crazy for a moment…

Complete Long Shots

Zelda. We know it’s coming to the 3DS eventually, but exactly what form that game will take remains to be seen. Again, since E3 is just around the corner, pretty much everything I’m about to say is probably a long shot – the Big N is most likely saving it’s biggest announcements for its E3 press conference. But if not… maybe tomorrow they’ll announce that A Link to the Past remake Miyamoto-san has been teasing us about for years now. Or Majora’s Mask for 3DS. Or both, in a bundle, with a special 3DS XL and a cherry on top. Likely? No. Possible? Ummm. Well. No. But hey, a gamer can dream, right?

Let Flute Boy play again, Nintendo!

Another long shot that Nintendo could possible surprise us with is the localization of Bravely Default Flying Fairy. They can’t keep that game from us forever… right? It seems unlikely that Pokemon X and Y will make an appearance – since Pokemon usually operates outside the normal Nintendo realm and would probably get its own event – but there’s a very small chance that Pikachu's latest and fellow October game Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate will be on show. And, just to be thorough, let’s round off the crazy, unlikely speculation with the always-possible possibility that a new Nintendo IP will be revealed. Are you in a frenzy yet?

Which of these games do you most hope are shown off tomorrow? Did we miss any? Let us know all about it in the comments section below, and be sure to check in tomorrow and the next day for in-depth coverage on everything 3DS.
