Parks and Recreation: "Partridge" Review

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...

"Skim milk is just water that's lying about being milk."

Okay, so while not all of "Partridge" had me rolling, the numerous flashback scenes featuring Ron wanting, very badly, to punch Councilman Jamm in the face, even back when he didn't even know who he was, was incredible. It's not often (or ever?) that Parks and Rec uses flashback humor, so that helped this instance really stand out with extra hilarity. There were moments when Ron just looked out of his office window, across the courtyard at Jamm, daydreaming about clocking him.

So damn great.

And one of the best parts about it was that, for a show that does a fantastic job of calling back jokes, trends, characters and places, Ron's intensions to harm Jamm were unknown to us. We knew April was lying about vegetarian Ron being "SoftyPants McHuggable," but we didn't know Tom was lying when he was testifying.

In the end, Jamm went from winning via "self-Jamm" to losing via straight-up "Jamm." But the entire lawsuit from Jamm (who was "not not going to win nothing"), lorded over by Jean-Ralphio's diabolical lawfirm of Gately, Wayne, Kittenplan & Troeltsch (names!), was more of testimony of what a stand up guy Ron Swansuck Swanson is; a man who wouldn't even let his friends lie for him to protect his mass poundage of buried gold.

Plus, who doesn't love Andy's over-honesty when it comes to sneeze boners?  See, he pooched the brain exam so you probably shouldn't take anything he says too seriously.

"Partridge" was also great because it brought back Ben's Ice Town debacle (which I still think should eventually be brought, as a success story, to Pawnee) while giving Adam Scott some really great, goofy moments to play while Ben was on morphine. Due to the "decalcified rock lodged in his penis" and all. It reminded me of when Ann was drunk and how fun it was to watch the character who we usually depend on to react to all the craziness get a little crazy themselves. So Ben fed a Bronze Eagle, cried at the Price is Right and decided that the citizens of his hometown of Partridge, Minnesota should realize that "love is everywhere and that they have to surrender to the flow of the universe."

J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man) guest starred as the current Partridge Mayor, trying to win popularity points for setting up the still-hated Ben Wyatt for a humiliating fall by presenting him with a briefcase full of water. Fortunately, Ben was indisposed and Lesie was there to cry shame and foul. This was a good husband and wife episode for the duo; allowing to be sweetly in love while stuck in a very funny situation. And the fact that his hometown still hates the "Ice Clown" is another wonderful trait to add to Ben's list of peculiarities.

On the soft-laughs side of things, Ann and Chris took a compatibility test to see how they'd be as parents and scored fairly low. All in all, it wasn't the greatest side story as we all knew too well, just from watching the show, that they'd be great parents not matter what a score says. The nice surprise at the end was that the usually hyper-competative Chris was the one to not care about the score and realize that it's all about love. It was a nice story, but didn't do much more than elicit a few "awws."
