Ratings: Walking Dead vs. Game of Thrones

Yesterday was a big day for fans of epic television. Between the finale of The Walking Dead: Season 3 and Game of Thrones' Season 3 premiere, it was a record-breaking night for both AMC and HBO.

IGN's The Walking Dead: Season 3 Finale Review

AMC's Walking Dead finale delivered its largest audience ever with 12.4 million viewers overall and 8.1 million adults 18-49, making it the number one program for the night. The series' season average was also number one for the broadcast season for adults 18-49, besting other hit network shows like The Big Bang Theory, The Voice and Modern Family. In short, Walking Dead is a massive success at this point.

Meanwhile, EW.com reports that HBO's Thrones racked up 4.4 million viewers for the season premiere (and 6.7 million after two repeat airings) -- that's 13 percent up from last year and a record for the series.

What's interesting, though is that AMC's Talking Dead actually outperformed Game of Thrones' initial airing, with 5.2 million viewers tuning in to the live post-Walking Dead talk show. Yes, obviously more people have AMC than HBO -- still, it's notable when a show about The Walking Dead continues to do those numbers, with the Talking Dead also beating plenty of network series as well.
