Skybreaker #1 Review

If you like your death on a pale horse and armed with a six shooter, you are going to love Skybreaker. One issue in and we've already got a rich and violent western world filled with compelling characters and plenty of blood. Skybreaker is the kind of series you can really dig into and it's got the kind of price point that digital readers love (only a buck)!

Michael Moreci has a knack for characters, and that comes through in this issue. There's a lot going on in Skybreaker #1, but we still manage to get a clear sense of these characters fairly quickly. Western fans will find a lot to love here; you'll definitely get your fill of good, bad, and ugly in this comic. And by ugly, I mean arrows flying through dudes' eyeballs. Wherever Skybreaker is headed, I know I want to be along for the ride.

All that violence looks awful pretty too, thanks to Drew Zucker. His art has a clean and crisp quality that gives Skybreaker a smooth feel. The best bits are also the most violent, when axes hit heads or brains get splattered. It's good stuff. The only thing really missing is color. Skybreaker is a black and white book, but Zucker's art is just begging for some colors. He does some grayscale work here and there, which looks nice, but there are plenty of panels that feel sparse due to the lack of color. Skybreaker is a mighty fine comic book and further proves that Monkeybrain is the publisher to watch these days.
