The Aurora is your introduction to Star Citizen, so get to know it well. The entry-level, one-man ship is what you’ll use to leave your homeworld and begin exploring. It is, as Cloud Imperium Games founder Chris Roberts puts it, a jack-of-all-trades. “It’s modular enough that you can outfit it with a bigger hull for trading, or a tractor beam for piracy, or stronger guns for dogfighting,” Roberts tells IGN. “And it’s affordable: this is the first ship most players will pick up when they start the game.”
Good thing it’s as versatile and beautiful as it is: A pilot never forgets their first ship.
Aurora is “ similar to the Tarsus in the original Privateer: Not as nice as the high end ships, but you’ll have an emotional attachment to it, and it’s sturdy enough to get you through serious scrapes,” Roberts says. “You’ll have better ships down the line, but you’ll always look back on your Aurora as your ship.
Roberts thinks of “the great fighter plane rivalries in World War II: the Hurricane versus Spitfire, Thunderbolt versus Mustang.” Compared to the first revealed Star Citizen ship, Constellation, Aurora may not be as snazzy, powerful, or large, but this is “a tough-as-nails alternative that you’ll fall in love with.” Aurora is also consciously designed to look similar to what Roberts colloquially calls ‘Stella. “You should get the idea that it’s a tough little ship,” he says.

If you’ve backed for a special ship like the Constellation, that’s the ship you’ll start with instead of the Aurorain Star Citizen.
Customization is important to Aurora in different ways." The equipment decisions that are made will really reflect the personality and character of the owner,” says conceptual artist Ryan Church. It remains to be seen what, precisely, this entails. Aurora comes in a few different flavors, too, such as the Clipper merchant or the deluxe LX model, the most elite class of Aurora. The Aurora Marque, meanwhile, is better for cargo and combat than the basic Aurora Essential and the Legionnaire is to be revealed. So what if you pledged on Kickstarter for something different? Ben Lesnick from the community team says, "If you’ve backed for a special ship like the Constellation, that’s the ship you’ll start with instead of the Aurorain Star Citizen! If you start a second character or pledge for a package without a ship then you’ll get an Aurora on loan, which you’ll have to pay off in the game (think earning your house in Animal Crossing.)" The Aurora is the lowest-level pledge ship, if you were wondering.

Roberts is promising even more on Star Citizen for fans in the near future. “We announced 13 different ships during the crowd-funding Kickstarter campaign and so far we have only put out two brochures,” he says. “So there are 11 more in the pipeline that you’ll be seeing in the near future, and of course the game will have plenty of other ships we haven’t announced yet.” However, Roberts says there will be a 14th ship revealed next month: Avenger.
