Yesterday Apple took the stage at the Moscone Center in San Francisco to mark the start of this year's Worldwide Developers Conference. During the keynote, CEO Tim Cook and company discussed the state of Apple's mobile and traditional computing platforms, and also unveiled the newly-designed iOS 7, a brand new Mac Pro desktop computer, the long-rumored iTunes Radio streaming service, and upgrades to the MacBook Air notebooks. If you missed the announcements as they happened — there were more than a few things that could have distracted you — check out what was shown at the event below.
Probably the biggest announcement to come out of WWDC 2013 was the debut of iOS 7, Apple's upcoming operating system for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The latest version of iOS is the first to aesthetically break away from the interface design that has been present on Apple's mobile devices since the introduction of the original iPhone. But the changes with iOS 7 are more than skin deep, as a number of additional features have been included as well, such as iCloud Keychain, an upgraded Safari Browser, automatic app updates, new gesture-based commands, and AirDrop support.
After years of neglecting its powerhouse traditional desktop computer, Apple has finally announced a new Mac Pro. Like its predecessors, the new Mac Pro is filled to the brim with high-powered internals, and can even support multiple 4K displays. But most shocking is the size of the new Mac Pro. Not only is the design drastically different than previous versions, but the chassis is only one-eighth the size of most recent Mac Pro, while packing 2.5 times the power.
Apple's long-rumored streaming music service is finally official. Coming this fall, iTunes Radio will let users listen to over 200 pre-set stations or their own stations based on songs they like. Siri will also be integrated, and the service will be available across all of Apple's platforms, as well as PCs running iTunes.
OS X 10.9 Marvericks, the newest version of Apple's traditional operating system, was also announced yesterday. The OS will include an updated Safari browser, iCloud Keychain, improved Notifications, a re-designed Calendar app, and more. Mavericks is also said to be much more energy efficient than previous versions of the operating system, with the company claiming that users can expect 72-percent less CPU activity.
Apple's MacBook Air line received some notable upgrades as well. With the help of Intel's new Haswell processors, the new MacBook Airs are expected to be both speedy and energy efficient. Battery life has also been improved on both the 11-inch and 13-inch versions, with the larger model expected to last up to 12 hours on a single charge.
