Dan Harmon Discusses Returning to Community for Season 5 and Possibly Recording Commentary for the Season 4 DVD Set

Co-hosting an event at L.A.’s Silent Movie Theater this weekend, Community creator Dan Harmon spoke a bit about his surprising return to the NBC comedy for Season 5, reveals THR.

Whenever Harmon was asked about the show this past year, after having been let go by Sony and NBC after Season 3, he noted he had not been watching it – simply feeling he was not comfortable doing so or giving his opinion on the episodes made without him because he was too close to it. This weekend, Harmon noted he still hadn’t seen Season 4, adding, “I swear to God," though that will change now that he is actually going to be working on the show again.

Harmon again confirmed that he was “going back to run Community -- along with, as my co-showrunner, the hands-down best writer of all the seasons, Chris McKenna.” McKenna had left after Season 3, following Harmon’s dismissal.

With Community having wrapped production on Season 4 several months ago, it seems no writers are in place for Season 5 beyond Harmon and McKenna as yet. Harmon joked to the audience this weekend, “If any of you are a midlevel writer who doesn’t work for Parks and Rec, let me know that you exist and I would love to hire you. Because this city has been picked clean by every show already, and right now we have to put a staff together. So see me after the show. And it pays -- I don’t know -- 25 grand a week or something like that.”

Harmon returning to Community is an incredible turn of events – one pretty much unseen in TV history, as far as a producer who was effectively fired from a series (and not leaving on their own) returning. So why not some more oddness to go with that? Harmon also revealed he may do commentary on the Season 4 DVDs – yes, the season he had nothing to do with and has yet to see.

Explained Harmon, “Sony said they’re very interested in recording me watching it as a commentary track.” Asked what that might entail, Harmon replied, “I think I can do anything. It would move Season 4 DVDs, for sure. But I’ll be checking it out soon, and then I’ll figure out what we’re doing for Season 5.”
