E3 2013: Crimson Dragon Is Definitely a Panzer Dragoon Game

Did you like Panzer Dragoon: Orta on the original Xbox? Do you like the idea of flying on the back of a dragon? Are you a fan of shooting fireballs at horrible monsters while mythical beasts fly you through scenic settings? Do you love the idea of using a controller instead of Kinect to fly said beast? How about spectacular visual set-pieces? Again, are you a Panzer Dragoon fan?

Well, then, Crimson Dragon is right up your alley.

Crimson Dragon is, straight-up and without even trying to hide it, a Panzer Dragoon game. "Spiritual successor" doesn't seem an appropriate way to describe what is shamelessly, lovingly a Panzer Dragoon sequel in disguise. The function and feel of the on-rails dragon-flying shooter is near identical, albeit more refined for the era, to that of its greatest influence.

In one mission, you'll even fight a familiar worm monster, slinking in and out of the water beneath to escape your attacks. You'll lock onto foes with multiple missiles, blow up obstructions in the way as you cruise along a pre-destined path, and narrowly dodge canyon walls.

That's basically it. I don't mean to be reductive, but Crimson Dragon knows what it is, what it wants to be, and who it wants to attract. With any luck, it'll find better success in the West than Orta ever did. You're either in or you're out, really. Maybe you're curious because the new generation brings you the idea of cruising on a big, fireball-breathing monster for the very first time.

In which case, welcome. Panzer Drag--uh, Crimson Dragon is pretty cool on Xbox One.
