Free, Mobile Players Are 'Largest Group' of Gamers in US

Free and mobile gamers make up 29 percent of gamers in the United States according to a new report from the NPD Group. That percentage makes them the largest segment in the gaming population, with the "Avid Omni Gamer" ("those who are frequent gamers and play on multiple systems with consoles and the PC being the devices of choice") holding second place with 16 percent.

Those two segments were the only two to experience growth in the last year, with the others - the "Casual Gamer," "Core Console Gamer," "Family Gamer" and "Social Gamer" - decreasing in size since 2012.

“Growth among both the Free and Mobile Gamer and Avid Omni Gamer segments speaks to the different types of gamer personalities, the type of experiences they are looking for and the growing opportunities provided by different gaming capable devices” said NPD analyst Liam Callahan.

The study also found that Core Console Gamers are the most likely to use their consoles for things other than gaming like streaming movies. Core Console Gamers are also "playing on the most systems - an average of five, with the Xbox 360 being the most popular."

NPD's report is based on a March 2013 survey completed by 8,831 participants.
