Two-thirds of the way through the series and it's probably safe to say we have the makings of a masterpiece here. Don't let the covers fool you, this isn't just some beat 'em up action tale featuring a giant mud monster. No, Breath of Bones is a moving storying of war, family, and honor. It's about standing your ground and facing the darkness on the horizon. It's heartbreaking, moving, and powerful. Plus, it looks like the third issue is going to feature a giant mud monster punching nazis, so it's got a little bit of everything, you know?
Steve Niles' script is one of the best he has ever produced. There are no cheap thrills here, Breath of Bones earns its moments. There's a sense of horror to the story; a feeling of dread as the war threatens to engulf the character's small town. Two issues in and we have barely seen the promised monster, which turns out to be a very good thing. This is captivating stuff, one of the best minis in recent memory.
Dave Wachter is the main attraction in this series. His dark washed and moody artwork brings this story to brilliant life. From the characters to the landscape to the shadows of a barn that holds the town's last hope against the machine of war. It's stunning; every page, every panel. This is how comics should read. This is a thing of beauty in every sense of the word. The third issue of Breath of Bones can't get here fast enough.
