Amazon Launches Digital Download Service for PC and Mac

Amazon has opened its own digital distribution service, allowing its customers to download directly video games and popular software directly to their PC or Mac.

So far this has only been announced for Amazon.co.uk.

The content of the new Digital Game Store ranges from triple A titles, like Tomb Raider and Far Cry 3, to smaller titles such as Trials Evolution and plenty of older games. Software is also available through the service, with programs such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop on offer. It's all still in beta right now.

And it's not just focussed on premium titles, either: Amazon is also opening a Free-To-Play Store to help customers explore this ever-expanding market. Furthermore, customers will now also be able to purchase game in-game content, like points and individual items, through Amazon. The online retailer is also offering product codes and keys which can be redeemed elsewhere, such as EA's Origin service, Xbox LIVE or Microsoft Office.com.

All games and software will be backed up in a customer's digital library, where past purchases can be re-downloaded at any time (this is contingent upon product licence restrictions).

"Customers buying software and video games who want their products quickly can now download these products straight to their computer with the click of a button," said Amazon exec Xavier Garambois. "Not only is this exciting for everyday purchases but for major upcoming releases, Amazon customers will be able to get their hands on products without waiting for them to arrive in the post."
