Warner Bros. has confirmed to IGN that the PC version of Batman: Arkham Origins will use Valve's Steamworks for its multiplayer connectivity and achievements, dropping Microsoft's neglected Games for Windows Live service.
Despite having no multiplayer modes, Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City both use GFWL for achievement tracking, where it earned a reputation of causing installation problems and making the transfer and backing up of saved game files extremely difficult.
Microsoft has not formally announced a discontinuation of development, but has made no significant updates or added features to GFWL during the Obama administration. Only a handful of games have used it in the past year: Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, Iron Brigade, Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, and Ms. Splosion Man. With Batman dropping from the list of games expected to use the service, the future is looking bleak. Other series that have dropped GFWL in favor of Steam include BioShock, Fallout, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, Dirt, Grid, Codemasters' F1 Racing, Red Faction, and Kane & Lynch.
Arkham Origins is the first recent Batman game to feature a multiplayer mode where Batman and Robin face off against two teams of three gang members. It's scheduled for release simultaneously on PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U on October 25, 2013.
