Dead Island: Epidemic Announced

More Dead Island is on the way, but this time the zombies are going free-to-play and only on PC.

Publisher Deep Silver just announced Dead Island: Epidemic, an online multiplayer battle arena. It's supposed to take place in the "Dead Island universe," so it sounds like Deep Silver has big plans for this franchise. Indeed, the publisher urges us to stay tuned for more on Dead Island in general.

For Epidemic, we can expect all the "trademark elements" of the Dead Island experience, which one can assume means fighting zombies in an open world with an emphasis on melee combat and silly weapons like electrocuted machetes. But since this is a multiplayer battle arena, it is unclear whether or not we'll get to play as zombies.

Epidemic will be the third Dead Island game, following the original in 2011 and this year's Dead Island: Riptide. Both were released for 360 and PS3 as well as PC. They were developed by Techland, but today's announcement didn't mention who is developing Epidemic. Techland is working on another zombie game called Dying Light for next-gen consoles.

We'll be checking out Dead Island: Epidemic at Gamescom in just a couple weeks, so look for our impressions soon here at IGN.
