Although it had been tracking to open in first place this weekend, Kick-Ass 2 failed to do much ass-kicking at the weekend box office, running neck and neck with last weekend's champ Elysium for what, according to weekend estimates, is a fourth place debut of $13.6 million.
It's possible Kick-Ass 2 will nudge up into third place when the final numbers are reported Monday. Either way, it's still roughly $6 million less than what the 2010 original opened with and is very difficult to be viewed as less than anything than a commercial disappointment.
Instead, audiences flocked to see Lee Daniels' The Butler, which bowed in first place with $25 million. The weekend's other two wide releases disappointed. The biopic jOBS debuted softly in seventh place, while Paranoia -- starring Liam Hemsworth and Harrison Ford -- utterly flopped with a 13th place opening of $3.5 million.
Here are the weekend box office estimates via Rentrak:
1. Lee Daniels' The Butler $25 million
2. We're the Millers $17.8 million
3. Elysium $13.6 million
4. Kick-Ass 2 $13.6 million
5. Planes $13.1 million
6. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters $8.4 million
7. jOBS $6.7 million
8. 2 Guns $5.6 million
