When you think about it, fans of Markus "Notch" Persson are probably already interested in creating virtual worlds. After all, the Swedish game designer gave us Minecraft, so it makes sense the community would rally to reassemble the pieces of an abandoned project. While Notch has decided to stop working on his sci-fi sandbox game 0x10c, US Gamer reports a group of fans are now building their own version of the game.
News of a Notch-helmed space game began trickling out last year, with the designer occasionally showing off images or talking about gameplay. But during a recent livestream of Team Fortress 2 on his Twitch channel, Notch shocked fans by stating the 0x10c project was going the way of the dinosaur. Soon, a group of dedicated community members began plotting how to move forward with the same themes of 0x10c, and decided to create Project Trillek without using any assets from Notch.
"I think we didn't really look into why he put it on hold," said Trillek's project lead, Shane Dalton. "We just sort of looked at the project and were like, 'Okay. This is a community project now.' We're not using any of his old code, his name or anything."
On Monday, Notch wrote a brief blog post officially stating 0x10C as "on ice," but showing full support for the Project Trillek team's efforts. "I find this absolutely amazing," said Notch. "I want to play this game so much, but I am not the right person to make it. Not any more. I’m convinced a new team with less public interest can make a vastly superior game than what I would make."
The Project Trillek development team has no current plans to monetize the game, outside of donations to assist with server costs.
