At long last, Wonder Woman joins Superman #712 and Batman #17 to form the Trinity of Perfection. I thought Wonder Woman #12 was going to be as good as it gets for this series, but somehow Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang managed to build on what made that issue so great and deliver the most poignant, powerful, and poetic superhero comic book I’ve ever read. It doesn't get much better than this, folks.
With the First Born sitting on a false throne, threatening to take away little Zeke and all of Olympus as well, Wonder Woman stands tall, yet not alone. Orion, Hera, and Zola have her back, and so does the God of War. His interactions with Wonder Woman here as a father figure harken back to that old school origin issue, Wonder Woman #0, and bring their disgruntled feelings full circle with an unexpected emotional gut punch. Everyone takes a beating in this issue, but it’s your heart that will be hurting most by the end.
Cliff Chiang has been tearin’ it up on Wonder Woman since issue #1, but he reaches another level here. When War calls his army? Beyond epic! The sight of countless warriors from different eras, races, and creeds all rushing forward under the gargantuan form of War will send chills up your spine. Azzarello accents each image with the perfect bit of dialogue. “They remind me of my sisters,” Wonder Woman says, to which War replies, “I’m sure most of these men would take that as a compliment.” I’ve often said that Azzarello writes comics like poetry, and this is his Iliad.
And that’s what makes this comic so masterful. There’s no visible gap between the writer and the artists. Chiang’s crisp linework, Jared K. Fletcher’s emotive lettering, and Matthew Wilson’s impeccable colors work with Azzarello’s narrative as one seamless force of creativity, unrestricted by everything that seems to hold most other superhero comics back. The result is a comic that is, well, wonderful.
